더블베이스(콘트라베이스)를 연주하는 닉은 실력이 뛰어나서 학교 오케스트라단에서 선생님과 아이들로부터 큰 박수를 받습니다.

학교를 마친 후, 커다란 더블베이스를 메고 어디론가 가는 닉. 하지만 가는 길은 고난의 연속이네요.

개에게 쫓기기도 하고,
만원버스에서는 승객들에게 큰 더블베이스 때문에 불평도 들었으며,
버스에서 내리자 비가 내렸지만 우산을 쓸 수도 없었고,
키보다 더 큰 더블베이스를 메고 가는 닉을 보고, 동네 아이들은 놀리기도 했습니다.

마침내 목적지인 도착했지만, 이런 엘리베이터가 고장났네요. 할 수 없이 더블베이스를 둘러메고, 계단을 오르고 또 올라가서 도착한 곳은 바로 할아버지 집. 할아버지는 블루스 밴드단원이고, 할아버지 집에는 블루스 벤드 멤버들이 모두 모여 있었어요.

닉은 학교부터 할아버지 집까지 오는 동안 길거리에서 들었던 온갖 소리들을 머리 속에 떠 올리며, 할아버지와 밴드 멤버들 앞에서 멋진 즉흥곡을 연주합니다...
