파리는 인간에게는 가장 혐오스러운 곤충 중에 하나지요. 사람들은 파리를 보면 파리채를 휘두르든, 살충제를 뿌리든, 어떻게든 박멸하려고 합니다.

여리 파리 한마리가 나비에 대해서 배우고 있는 교실로 들어와서 자신들이 받고 있는 억울한 오해들에 대해 아이들에게 자세히 해명합니다.

비행 능력은 파리가 나비보다 월등하게 뛰어나. 나비는 1초에 날개짓을 5~12회 밖에 못하지만, 파리는 무려 200회나 할 수 있고, 파리는 평형추같은 것이 달려 있어서 균형을 잃지 않고 자유자재로 회전할 수 있는 능력도 지니고 있어...."

이렇게 파리는 아이들에게 자신에 대해서 열심히 변명하지만, 더럽거나 썩은 음식, 배설물들을 식량으로 하다보니 본의아니게 몸에 수많은 병균을 지니고 다녀서 인간들에게 수많은 질병을 일으키게 된다는 점에 대해서는 변명의 여지가 없다고 이실직고 합니다.

이 외에도 이 책은 파리에 대해 사람들이 갖고 있는 잘못된 편견들을 하나하나 깨트려 주고, 파리가 지니고 있는 놀라운 Facts들을 자세히 알려줍니다. 무엇보다도 파리가 인간에게 해만 끼치는 것은 아니고, 자연의 청소부 역할을 해서 환경을 깨끗이 하는데 기여한다는 새로운 사실도 알려줍니다.
