미국의 한국계작가인 헬레나 구 리의 대표작입니다. 헬레나의 부모님은 이민 1세대이며, 헬레나가 어릴 때, 야간 청소부 일을 하시던 부모님을 따라가서 보고 느꼈던 경럼을 바탕으로 이 책을 만들었다고 합니다.

다니엘의 부모님은 야간에 시내의 빈 사무실을 청소하는 일을 합니다. 비록 사회의 밑바닥 일이지만 부모님은 자식들이 미국 사회에서 성공하기를 바라며 힘든 하루하루를 악착같이 버티며 살고 있지요. 그런데 어느날 엄마 아빠는 청소일을 나갈 준비를 하고 있는데 베이비시터가 일이 생겨서 오지 못한다는 전화를 받습니다. 어쩔 수 없이 잠이 든 다니엘을 깨워서 함께 일터로 데리고 가게 됩니다.

졸려서 투덜거리는 다니엘에게 아빠가 해 준 한마디에 다니엘의 잠은 확 달아났습니다. "전에도 얘기해 줬지만, 이곳은 용이 사는 종이의 왕국(Paper Kingdom)이란다." "그리고 이 왕국에는 왕과 왕비, 그리고 왕을 위해 일하는 용이 있단다."

이 말을 듣고 다니엘은 상상 속의 나래에 빠져 그들을 찾아다닙니다. 그런데 왕국(사무실 빌딩)은 가는 곳마다 너무나도 엉망진창입니다. 그리고 왕과 왕비와 용들이 어지른 왕국을 힘들게 청소하는 부모님을 보는 다니엘의 마음은 너무나도 불편했습니다. 자기들이 어지른 것은 자기들이 스스로 치워야 하는 것이 아닌가 하는 생각이 들었지요.

화가 난 다니엘에게 아빠는 조용히 한마디 말을 해줬습니다. "언젠가 너는 왕이 될 거야. 그때 너는 용들에게 따끔하게 명령을 내려서 용들이 스스로 깔끔하게 치우도록 할 수 있단다."

이 책의 작가인 헬레나 구 리0는 부모님의 기대에 부응해서 미국 최고의 명문대인 예일대와 버클리대 로스쿨 졸업하고 로펌에서 일을 하기도 했으나, 자신의 적성이 창의적인 일을 하는 것이라는 것을 깨닫고 현재는 동화 작가로서의 삶을 살고 있다고 합니다.
