이 책의 저자인 Marcia Brown은 Caldecott상을 9차례나 수상한 어린이 그림책의 Classic이라 불리웁니다.
전쟁이 끝나고 고향으로 돌아가는 세명의 배고픈 군인들이 한 마을에 도착했어요. 그러나 마을 사람들은 군인들은 항상 음식을 요구한다는 것을 알고 있기 때문에 모두 식량을 감추어 버리지요. 모든 마을 사람들로부터 나눠줄 식량이 없다는 얘기를 들은 군인들은 한가지 꾀를 냅니다. 배고픈 주민들을 위해 돌을 끓여서 만든 맛있는 수프를 대접해 주겠다고 제안합니다. 마을 사람들은 호기심을 갖고 모여듭니다.
우선 마을에서 가장 큰 무쇠 솥을 가져오게 합니다. 그리고는 물을 가득 채우고 커다랗고 둥근 돌 3개를 넣고 펄펄 끓입니다. 물이 끓자 간을 맞추어야 하니까 소금과 후추를 좀 달라고 합니다. 당근과 양배추를 넣으면 Stone Soup의 맛이 더 좋아진다고 말합니다. 마을 사람들은 생전 처음들어보는 Stone Soup를 맛보고 싶은 욕심에 군인들이 말하는대로 요리 재료를 하나씩 가져 오지요.
고기를 넣으면 귀족이 먹는 고급스러운 스톤스프가 된다고 하면 누군가가 귀족의 음식을 맛보고 싶은 욕심에 고기를 가져오고, 보리와 우유만 더 넣으면 왕이 먹는 최고급의 스톤스프가 된다고 하자 누군가가 보리와 우유를 가져옵니다.
이렇게 해서 완성된 스톤스프는 가난한 마을 사람들로서는 처음 맛보는 굉장한 것이었지요. 커다란 테이블이 펼쳐지고 마을 잔치가 벌어집니다. 빵과 술을 겯들여서...^^
페이지를 넘길수록 마음이 유쾌해지는 재미있는 책입니다. 호기심은 인간의 가장 억제하기 힘든 본능중 하나이지요...

So all the food was hidden under mattresses or in barns. There followed a battle of wits, with the soldiers equal to the occasion. Stone soup? Why, of course, they could make a wonderful soup of stones...but, of course, one must add a carrot or two...some meat...so it went. Marcia Brown has made of this old tale a very gay book, a carnival of activity, of dancing and laughter. So much goes on in the pictures that children who have once heard the story will turn to them again and again, retelling the story for themselves.
