어울릴 것 같지 않은 올빼미군과 고양이양이 사랑에 빠졌어요. 둘은 보트를 타고 먼 바다로 여행을 떠납니다. 올빼미군은 아름다운 고양이양을 위해 세레나데를 부르고 바닷속의 소라를 잡아줍니다. 서인도 제도의 섬에 도착해서 돼지코에 달려 있는 링을 결혼반지 삼아 공작새의 주례로 결혼식을 올립니다. 그리고 무인도에서 둘은 달빛을 받으며 행복한 춤을 추지요.
페이지를 넘길 때마다 배를 따르는 물고기가 하나 둘씩 늘어나는 모습을 보는 것도 재미있으며, 특히 서로 떨어져 있는 노란색 열대어가 마지막에 서로 만나는 장면도 이 책에서 즐길 수 있는 또다른 재미입니다.

She traveled to the Caribbean (the land where the Bong-tree grows, perhaps?) to research her illustrations as well as the settings, costume details, plants, and fish native to the area. Readers can follow an illustrated subplot of two yellow fish who also fall in love under the pea-green boat. A charming treatment of a classic children's poem.

Following her recent paeans to winter ( The Mitten ; The Wild Christmas Reindeer ), Brett irradiates her interpretation of the classic Lear nonsense verse with hues of tropical intensity. As the Owl and the Pussycat, both attired in madras plaids, set out from a Caribbean locale on their romantic voyage, Brett launches a series of lush seascapes, the colors for which might well have been inspired by exotic jungle birds. The artist's celebrated borders are almost fully integrated into the illustrations--there are no vertical borders, and each spread is divided into horizontal zones. The thin uppermost layer evokes Caribbean basketry or similar elements that impart an architectural weight, as if the story were being viewed from a window; the bottom zone reveals the action below sea-level, where a golden fish, emulating the Owl, wordlessly seeks its true love. Brett's customary attention to detail results in an extravagantly gorgeous book. |
