칼데콧상을 받은 질리안 타마키의 또 하나의 대표작입니다. 국내에서는 "세상은 색으로 가득해요"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간된 명작 그림책입니다.

하늘의 색깔은 파란색이지요. 그리고 바닷물 색깔도 파란색입니다. 호기심 많은 아이는 바닷물에 들어가 두 손으로 바닷물을 담아보지만, 그 물은 파란색이 아니라 투명합니다. 소녀는 문득 우리 주변을 수놓은 색들을 하나씩, 하나씩 떠올리기 시작해요. 달걀노른자의 선명한 주황색은 굳이 달걀을 깨보지 않아도 알 수 있지요. 우리 몸에는 빨간색의 피가 온 몸을 돌고 있다는 것도 눈으로 보지 않아도 알고 있구요.

시들어버린 풀들로 덮여 있는 들판은 황금색으로 빛나고,
검은 회색 구름이 몰려오면 곧 비가 쏟아집니다.

봄이 오면 보라색 예쁜 꽃이 피고,
여름이 오면 세상은 온통 녹색으로 변합니다.
가을이 오면 나뭇잎들이 갈색으로 변하고,
겨울이 오면 온 세상은 하얀 눈으로 덮힙니다.

소녀는 졸음이 오자 눈을 감습니다. 소녀의 검은 머리색과 어둠이 함께 섞여서 구분이 잘 되지 않습니다.
아침이 되자 엄마는 내 검은 머리를 만집니다. 그리고 머리를 갈라서 땋아줍니다. 따뜻한 엄마의 손길과 찬란한 아침햇살... 창문 밖으로 보이는 세상은 온통 황금빛입니다...

이책은 아이의 눈으로 바라보는 색의 세계를 아름답게 담아낸 그림책입니다. 질리안 타마키 특유의 서정적인 그림체와 따뜻한 색감이 가득한 이 책을 읽다 보면, 우리가 평소 눈여겨보지 않았던 색들이 얼마나 찬란하게 세상을 채우고 있는지 느낄 수 있을 거예요.

Tamaki's picture book debut explores color and the seasons in a lyrical, philosophical way that is rooted in a child's sensibilities. A young girl contemplates things most assume as hard truths. "They say blue is the color of the sky….Which is true today! They say the sea is blue, too." But then she points out that it looks blue, but when she holds it in her hands "it's clear as glass." Then she wonders is a blue whale blue? She hasn't seen one. In a nonlinear, vignette fashion, seasons change as do feelings of frustration to wonder, capturing a child's imagination, mindfulness, and inquiry. Each unexpected turn from thought to thought will allow opportunities for rich discussion when using the book with children. Large swathes of acrylic paint on top of inked illustrations bring energy, color, and light to each sensitively rendered moment. Tamaki uses a motif of the young girl with her arms raised throughout, radiant with joy whether she is playing in the ocean, shedding winter clothes, or imagining that she is the tree she watches outside her bedroom window. The book ends with an intimate moment of her mother waking her in the morning, and as her mother braids her hair, they watch crows and wonder together what they are thinking.
