[ 책 소개 ]

온 몸에 날카로운 가시가 뾰죽뾰죽 솟아난 선인장 행크는 성질도 가시만큼 고약합니다. 선인장 행크는 사막의 열기, 건조함, 평화로움, 그리고 조용함을 좋아하지만, 행크의 이런 행복을 방해하는 친구들이 나타나네요. 마른 풀더미 로지, 육지 거북이, 토끼가 차례로 나타나서 행크에게 인사를 하지만 행크는 당장 꺼져버리라며 못되게 구네요.

지나가던 코요테가 행크에게 가까이 오지 말라는 소리를 듣고는 "너는 몸 안과 밖이 모두 뾰죽뾰죽하다"며 한마디 하고 갑니다. 그리고 지나가던 카우보이는 "너에게는 포옹이 필요할 것 같지만, 아무도 선인장을 안아주려하지 않아서 안됐군" 이라고 말합니다. 행크는 다가오던 도마뱀에게 "나에게 포옹을 기대하지 마"라고 하자, 도마뱀은 "잘됐네. 나도 너를 포옹하고 싶은 마음은 없어"라고 대답합니다.

그런데 행크의 마음이 조금씩 바뀌기 시작하네요. 어쩌면 따뜻한 포옹은 그리 나쁘지 않을지도 모른다고 생각합니다.

행크는 지붕 위에 앉아있는 부엉이에게 "만일 포옹할 상대를 찾고 있는 거라면, 내가 해줄 수도 있어"라고 조심스럽게 말을 건넵니다만, 부엉이는 "웃기고 있네"라는 말을 남기고 날아가 버립니다.

이제 외로움을 느끼기 시작한 행크...

다음날 바람에 날려온 종이컵이 행크의 가시에 박혀서 떨어지지 않는 일이 벌어지고, 역시 바람에 날려 온 마른 풀더미 로지가 컵을 쳐서 떼어줍니다. 행크가 고맙다는 말을 하기도 전에 로지는 바람에 날려 가고, 행크는 로지를 다시 만나면 감사의 뜻을 전하기 위해 예쁜 꽃을 피웁니다. 그리고 며칠 후 다시 나타난 로지는 행크로부터 꽃 선물을 받게 되자, 점프를 해서 행크를 꼭 껴안아줍니다. 행크의 가시 때문에 둘은 꼭 붙어 있게 되고, 둘은 혼자보다는 둘이 꼭 껴안고 있는 것이 더 좋다는 것을 깨닫게 되지요...
