프랑스 파리에 있는 왕실에서 화가들을 대상으로 미술 콘테스트를 열었습니다. 화가들은 자신의 걸작들을 들고 궁전으로 모였습니다. 모든 화가들이 옥좌에 앉은 왕, 말을 탄 왕, 갑옷을 입은 왕 등과 같이 위엄있고 화려한 그림들을 출품했습니다만, 펠릭스 크루소만은 달랑 오리 한 마리가 그려진 그림을 출품했습니다. 심사위원들이 모두 이 웃기지도 않은 오리 그림을 보고 기가 막혀 하고 있을 때, 갑자기 그림 속의 오리가 꽥꽥 소리를 내더니 살아서 그림 밖으로 걸어 나왔습니다. 크루소의 마법같은 재능에 감탄한 심사위원들은 그에게 그랑프리상을 주었고, 크루소는 일약 커다란 명성을 얻게 되었습니다. 그리고 왕을 비롯해서 많은 사람들이 그의 그림을 소유하게 되었지요...

하지만, 곧 크루소의 그림은 커다란 문제를 일으키기 시작했습니다. 잠자는 비단뱀을 그린 그림 속에서 뱀이 잠에서 깨어나 사람을 공격하고, 화산 그림 속에서 실제로 화산이 폭발하여 방 안을 연기로 가득 채우는가 하면, 폭포 그림에서는 폭포 물이 그림 밖으로 끝없이 쏟아져 내렸습니다. 대포 그림에서 대포가 실제로 포탄을 발사해서 파리 시내를 쑥대밭으로 만들자 참다 못한 주민들이 들고 일어나고, 크루소씨는 결국 감옥에 갇히는 신세가 되었습니다. 그리고 크루소씨의 그림은 모두 압수되어 파괴되었지만... 왕실에 걸려 있던 개 그림만은 다행히 살아 남을 수 있었습니다.

어느날 파리의 유명한 귀중품 도둑이 왕실로 몰래 숨어 들어 와서 왕관을 훔치려고 했지만, 벽에 걸려 있던 그림 속의 개가 살아나서 도둑을 잡는 일이 발생하고, 이 일을 계기로 크루소는 훈장을 받게 됩니다. 감옥에서 풀려난 크루소가 간 곳은...
