제이콥은 엄마와 함께 그동안 너무나도 갖고 싶었던 불이 들어오는 지구본을 사러 과학교구상점에 가는 길입니다. 가게가 문 닫을 시간이 얼마 안 남았기 때문에 제이콥은 마음이 급합니다만, 길에서 만난 많은 사람들이 제이콥이 쓰고 있는 안대에 대해서 궁금해 하네요. 유모차를 끌고 가던 아줌마도, 형네 학교에서 만난 형의 친구도, 아이스크림 가게에서 만난 점원도 모두 제이콥이 안대를 왜 쓰고 있는지에 대해서 궁금해 합니다. 그럴 때마다 일일이 대답을 하다가는 가게에 하나 밖에 남지 않은 지구본을 못살 수도 있다는 생각에 제이콥은 초조하기만 합니다. 제이콥은 무사히 지구본을 손에 넣을 수 있을까요?
사실 제이콥은 안대를 태어날 때부터 하고 있었습니다. 왼쪽눈 시력이 오른쪽눈보다 약했고 사시도 약간 있어서 의사는 하루에 10시간씩 오른쪽눈에 안대를 하고 왼쪽눈만 사용하게 하면 왼쪽눈 시력이 점점 좋아질 거라고 했지요. 이 책에서는 하루에 세시간씩만 안대를 하고 있지만, 결국 제이콥의 왼쪽눈 시력은 완전히 정상으로 회복되었다고 합니다.
사람들은 장애인이나 피부색과 머리칼색이 다른 사람과 같이 자신과는 다른 외모를 지니고 있는 사람들에 대해서 호기심을 갖는 경우가 많습니다만, 상대방 입장에서는 이런 것들에 대해 질문을 받는 것이 불편할 수도 있다는 점을 깨닫게 해주는 내용입니다.
책 말미에는 실제로 제이콥이 안대를 하고 커다란 지구본을 앞에 두고 찍은 실사 사진이 수록되어 있어서 이 책의 Reality를 높여 줍니다.
