이 책의 주인공인 나는 책을 정말로 싫어하는 1학년생. 그런데 책을 너무나도 사랑하는 도서관 사서인 브룩스 선생님은 아이들에게 책 읽는 재미를 깨닫게 해주려고 최선을 다합니다. 책을 읽어주는 Story Time 시간에는 책의 내용과 어울리는 복장으로 변장을 하기도 하고, 마치 연기를 하듯이 목소리 톤까지 바꿔가며 재미있게 책을 읽어줍니다. 아이들은 이런 브룩스 선생님을 좋아하지만, 나는 전혀 재미를 느끼지 못합니다.

그렇게 1년이 거의 다 지나갈 무렵, 내가 가장 싫어하는 독서주간이 다가왔어요. 독서주간에는 각자가 가장 좋아하는 책을 한권씩 선정해서 반 아이들 앞에서 소개하는 발표시간을 가져야 합니다. 엄마에게 다른 곳으로 이사가면 안되냐고 졸랐지만, 엄마는 도서관이 없는 학교는 어디에도 없다며 핀잔을 주네요.

발표할 책을 정하지 못해서 고민하는 나에게 브룩스 선생님은 온갖 종류의 책들을 한 보따리 안겨주면서 집에 가서 엄마와 함께 읽어보라고 하네요. 나는 엄마에게 그 어떤 책도 흥미를 느끼지 못한다고 하자, 엄마는 나에게 "stubborn as a wart"라며 얼굴의 사마귀같이 고집이 세다고 말합니다. 그 순간 나는 사마귀와 관련된 책을 읽으면 재미있을 것 같다고 생각했으며, 엄마는 얼굴에 사마귀 투성이인 괴물 슈렉의 책을 찾아줬습니다. 읽어보니 슈렉은 기대를 저버리지 않고 너무나도 재미있었습니다. 엄마의 도움을 받아 녹색 괴물 슈렉으로 변장을 하고 아이들 앞에서 발표를 하게 되고...
