2009년에 그해 가장 뛰어난 그림책에 수여하는 Caldecott Medal을 수상했으며, 국내에서는 "한 밤에 우리집은"이라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간된 명작 그림책입니다.

아무도 없는 집, 열쇠로 문을 열고 아이는 자기 방으로 들어갑니다. 스탠드 불빛이 침대를 비추고 그 위에는 그림책이 놓여 있습니다. 아이는 가만히 그림책을 펼쳐 들어요. 그림책을 펼치는 순간 아이는 새의 날개를 타고 달빛을 따라 별이 빛나는 우주 공간으로 날아오릅니다.

열쇠, 불빛, 침대, 그림책 등 아이들 주변의 사물들을 하나하나 떠올리면서 아이가 어둠에 익숙해지도록 이끌어가던 이야기는 침대 위의 그림책을 펼치는 순간, 아이로 하여금 새의 날개를 타고 달빛을 따라 별이 빛나는 우주 공간으로 날아오르게 합니다. 새는 밤하늘의 어둠을 밝히는 달님과 별님, 달님을 비춰 주는 햇님에 대해 노래합니다.

그림은 일상을 세세히 묘사하지만, 글은 속도감 있게 환상의 세계로 이끌어 가며 서로 엇갈리다가 어두운 밤하늘에서 해와 달 그리고 별이 빛나는 순간 일치합니다. 그리고 새의 노래를 타고 다시 방안의 침대로 돌아오면서 글과 그림은 다시 상상과 현실의 이중주를 연주하는 판타지 그림책의 전형을 따르고 있습니다.

끝말잇기 동요처럼 재미있게 밤하늘의 자연 현상을 생각해 볼 수 있도록 이끄는 점이 이 그림책을 읽는 즐거움입니다. 또한 밤하늘을 밝혀 주는 달님과 엄마의 사랑이 다르지 않다는 것을 보여줍니다.
