강가에 집이 있던 검피 아저씨는 어느 날 배를 끌고 나옵니다. 아저씨의 배를 본 동네 꼬마들, 토끼, 고양이, 개, 돼지, 양, 닭, 송아지, 염소들은 배를 타고 싶어서 아저씨에게 따라가도 되는지 불어봅니다. 이에 아저씨는 아이들에게는 싸우지 않겠다는 조건으로 토끼에게는 깡충깡충 뛰지 말라는 조건으로, 고양이에게는 토끼를 쫓아다니지 말고, 개는 고양이를 못살게 굴어서는 안되고, 돼지는 배 안을 더럽히지 말고, 양은 시끄럽게 울지 말고, 닭들은 날개를 푸드덕 거리지 말고 송아지는 쿵쿵거리지 말고, 염소는 뒷발질 치지 말라는 조건으로 모두 아저씨의 배에 타게 됩니다. 모두 즐겁게 뱃놀이를 하다가 그만 모두가 약속을 잊고 하고 싶은대로 하다가 배가 기울어지면서 모두 물속에 빠지고 맙니다. 모두들 강둑으로 헤엄쳐서 올라와서 햇볕에 몸을 말리고 아저씨 집으로 돌아와서 차와 간식을 먹습니다. 마음씨 좋은 검피 아저씨는 돌아가는 모두에게 "다음에 또 배 타러 오렴" 하면서 따뜻하게 배웅을 합니다.
존 버닝햄의 멋진 그림 솜씨가 유감없이 발휘 된 이 책은 왼편은 흑백의 스케치 풍으로 오른쪽은 새로 등장하는 동물들을 따뜻하고 화사한 색깔로 잘 표현하고 있습니다. 우리나라에서는 <검피아저씨의 뱃놀이 - 시공사>로 번역 출간되었습니다.

It's a pleasant day, so Mr. Gumpy decides to go for a boat ride. Each barnyard animal begs to join him, and Mr. Gumpy agrees-as long as each behaves! Two children join the fun, and as soon as the boat is launched, everyone does exactly what Mr. Gumpy asked them not to do. The result? Splash! This tale fits right into the toddler's sense of humor.

Mr. Gumpy owns a boat and has a house by the river. As he goes out in his boat one day, two children ask if they can join him. He agrees, on the condition that they won't squabble. The children are followed by a rabbit, a cat, a dog, a pig, a sheep, chickens, a calf and a goat. Mr. Gumpy sets conditions for them as well. For a while all is fine, but then the goat kicks, setting off a chain of events that sends everyone into the water. The brief and simple text holds delights for the ear with such words as "squabble," "tramp," and the wonderful admonition to the pig, "Don't muck about." The left-page, black-line illustration shows Mr. Gumpy in his boat with the addition of his new passengers at each turn of the page. The right-page illustration is in color and presents a large-size picture of the children and the animals as each asks to come along. This winner of the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, the Kate Greenaway Medal, and a New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book is a solid choice for the board book format. Toddlers will delight in the words and pictures and the satisfying ending of everyone sitting down to tea.

전후 시대의 대표적인 작가는 존 버닝햄(John Burningham 1936~)은 현재 가장 주목받는 영국 3대 그림책 작가 중 한 사람입니다. 1964년 그의 첫 번째 그림책인 <보르카 Borka>로 Kate Greenaway상을 받았으며 1970년 으로 두번째 Kate Greenaway상을 수상하였습니다. 특히 Burningham은 간결한 글과 마치 어린아이들이 그리는 그림처럼 꽉 채워지지 않은 자유로운 화풍으로 독특한 상상동화의 세계를 이끌어 나갑니다. 아이들의 무의식의 세계와 심오한 주제를 표현하는 작가로도 유명하며, 그림 동화 작가인 Helen Oxenbury(헬렌 옥슨버리,1938~)의 남편이기도 합니다. 그 밖의 작품으로는 <구름나라 - Cloudland ; 비룡소>, <알도 - ALDO ; 시공사>,<검피 아저씨의 드라이브 - 시공사>등이 우리들에게 번역되어서 많은 사랑을 받고 있습니다. |
