두더쥐 스위티는 다른 아이들이 보기에는 뭔가 좀 이상한 아이입니다. 할머니는 스위티를 Square Peg(부적응자)라고 불렀습니다.

다른 아이들은 예쁜 인형을 갖고 노는데, 스위티는 여전사 조나의 인형을 갖고 놀며,
취미는 야생 버섯을 관찰하는 것이고,
수업시간에 독후감을 글이 아닌 춤으로 보여줍니다.
가끔은 스위티도 다른 아이들 같이 머리도 꾸미고, 멋진 친구들을 갖고 싶다고 생각하기도 합니다.

스위티를 가장 잘 이해해 주는 사람은 루스이모입니다. 이모는 스위티의 취미가 전혀 이상한 것이 아니라고 합니다.
스위티는 이모가 어릴 때의 사진들을 보는 것을 좋아하는데, 이모의 질풍노도 시기에는 굉장했다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

이모는 자신도 어렸을 때 Square Peg(부적응자)라고 불린 적이 있었는데, 지금 와서 생각해보니 남들과 달랐었다는 것이 자기 인생에서 가장 좋았던 점이라고 말을 해줍니다. 자기 자신에게 진실된 삶을 꾸준히 유지한다면, 결국은 좋은 친구들을 발견할 수 있을 거라고 얘기해 주네요.

하지만 스위티는 자신을 이해해 줄 친구를 어떻게 알아볼 수 있는지 그 방법을 몰랐습니다. 아마도 좋은 친구를 만난 적이 있었지만 자기가 알아보지 못했을 거라고 생각합니다.

이제 스위티는 루스 이모가 말해준대로 자기 자신을 존중하며, 자기가 좋아하는 것을 계속 해 나가기로 합니다. 그리고 아마도 평범한 취미를 두어개 정도 갖는 것이 좋을지도 모르겠다고 생각합니다.

그런데 어느날 스위티는 기어가는 털복숭이 애벌레를 재미있게 보고 있는데, 애벌레를 좋아하는 샌디를 만나게 됩니다. 그리고 샌디 역시 자기 못지 않게 독특한 친구라는 것을 알게 되고...

Sweety is a particularly awkward naked mole rat. She doesn't always fit in with her classmates. She likes different things, like mushrooms and interpretive dance. Her grandmother calls her a square peg, but Aunt Ruth understands her. Aunt Ruth is a square peg herself and explains to Sweety that if the young mole rat stays true to herself, she will find her people. Sweety wonders who "her people" are and how will they recognize one another. Will there be a secret handshake? Sweety is indeed awkward, with head gear to pull her prominent front teeth together and thick eyeglasses. Pen-and-ink drawings, scanned and colored digitally in a washed color palette, depict the naked mole rats in clothing and other humanlike elements. Drawn with lots of squiggly black lines, tiny eyes, bald heads, and spindly limbs, the cast of characters could be described as adorable and dorky. Composition varies from page to page, ranging from spreads to multiple vignettes. The touching and comedic prose, dotted with an occasional conversation bubble, pairs perfectly with the adorkable characters. Square pegs rejoice, Zuill has created a worthy addition to her lineup of whimsical and lovable character-filled picture books. VERDICT A sweet and heartening selection, best shared one-on-one or in a small group setting.
