미국에서 흑인 및 유색인종에 대한 차별이 공공연하게 자행되던 1947년에 흑인 최초로 미국 프로야구인 메이저 리그의 선수가 된 재키 로빈슨이 겪게 되는 난관과 그를 팀 동료로 받아들이는 과정을 감동적으로 보여주는 책입니다.
인종차별 금지법이 없었던 1940년대에는 흑인들은 수입과 명예가 보장된 메이저리그에는 발을 들일 수 조차 없었으며, 흑인들로만 구성된 니그로 리그에서 뛰면서 고달픈 나날들을 보냈습니다. 당시에는 흑인들을 받아들이는 식당도 많지 않았고, 심지어는 호텔도 흑인들을 받아들이지 않았기 때문에 니그로 리그에 참여하는 흑인 선수들은 원정경기가 있는 날은 먹을 것도 싸가지고 다녀야 했고, 버스 안에서 잠을 자기 일쑤였지요.
미국 사회가 인종차별의 금기를 모두 쉬쉬하고 있을 때, 부루클린 다저스팀의 단장인 브랜치 리키는 과감하게 이 금기의 담장을 허물었습니다. 야구팬들은 피부색에 관계없이 최고의 기량을 지닌 선수의 플레이를 관전할 권리가 있다고 주장하면서, 니그로 리그에서 뛰고 있는 흑인 선수들 중에서 가장 기량이 뛰어난 재키 로빈슨을 스카우트 했습니다. 미국 역사상 인종차별의 벽을 허무는 가장 위대한 실험이 시작된 것입니다. 하지만 다저스팀에서의 생활은 순탄치 않았습니다. 팀동료들은 재키 로빈슨을 철저히 따돌렸으며, 피처들은 그의 머리를 향해 공을 던지기도 했고, KKK단 같은 인종차별단체로부터 살해협박을 받기도 했습니다. 팀과 함께 원정을 떠나도 호텔에서 흑인의 숙박을 거절하는 바람에 혼자서 따로 잠을 자야하는 일도 빈번했습니다.
하지만 온갖 어려움에도 불구하고 재키 로빈슨은 포기하지 않았습니다. 그리고 모두 재키에게 적대적으로 대할 때, 오직 한 명, 다저스팀의 유격수인 피위 리즈는 재키의 입장을 이해하게 되었습니다. 선수들이 재키를 팀에서 쫓아내야한다는 청원서의 서명을 할 때, 피위는 다른 선수들을 설득해서 청원서를 무산시키기도 했습니다.
마침내 야구시즌이 시작되고, 다저스팀은 미국에서도 가장 흑백차별이 심했던 신시내티로 원정경기를 갔습니다. 신시내티의 야구장은 관중석의 숨소리조차 선수들에게 다 들릴 만큼 관중석이 경기장과 가까왔습니다. 그곳에서 관중석을 가득 매운 백인 관중들이 일제히 재키를 향해 욕을 하면서 야유를 하자 1루를 맡고 있던 재키는 겁에 질리고, 경기장은 험악한 분위기로 바뀌었습니다. 그 때 유격수를 맡고 있던 피위는 관중들의 야유에 슬픔을 느꼈습니다. 그리고 재키를 위해 뭔가를 해야겠다고 결심한 피위는 갑자기 1루를 향해 걸어가기 시작하더니, 재키의 어깨를 껴않았습니다. 그 순간 관중석은 물을 끼얹은 듯 조용해지고, 피위는 세계를 향해 말했습니다. Golenbock has taken a single moment of baseball history, set it in its social context, and created a simple and moving tribute to courage and brotherhood. While other biographies of Robinson, and Robinson himself in I Never Had It Made (Putnam, 1972; o.p.), set the incident in Boston, Golenbock places it in Cincinnati, near Reese's Kentucky home. The event occurred during Jackie Robinson's first season with the Dodgers. Listening to the hatred that spilled out of the stands, Pee Wee Reese left his position at shortstop, walked over to Robinson at first base, put his around Robinson's shoulder, chatted for a few moments, and then returned to his position. The crowd was stunned into silence. Bacon has illustrated the book with an effective blend of photographs and drawings. Golenbock briefly but clearly describes the background of Robinson's entry into the National League, as well as Reese's background as a southerner and as the player with the most to fear if Robinson were successful--both men were shortstops (although Robinson would ultimately play second base). There have been several recent books about Robinson for young readers, such as David Adler's Jackie Robinson: He Was the First (Holiday, 1989) and Jim O'Connor's Jackie Robinson and the Story of All-Black Baseball (Random, 1989), but none of them have the style or dramatic impact of Golenbock and Bacon's work. This is a wonderful and important story, beautifully presented, but the geographic confusion is disturbing. |
