이 책에서는 차별받던 이민자의 딸이었던 "테레사 카레노"가 링컨 대통령 앞에서 피아노를 쳤던 이야기를 들려줍니다.

남미 베네주엘라에 살던 어린 소녀 테레사는 아빠로부터 피아노를 치는 법을 배웠으며, 그녀의 천재적인 재능은 빛을 발해서 6세때 작곡을 했고, 7세때는 대성당에서 피아노 연주를 했습니다. 테레사는 아름다운 피아노 건반 위에서 손을 춤추게 하는 것을 좋아했습니다. 그녀가 슬플 때는 음악이 그녀를 위로해줬고, 그녀가 기쁠 때는 피아노가 그 기쁨을 함께 나누도록 도와줬습니다.

8세때 베네수엘라에서 전쟁이 일어나는 바람에 테레사의 가족은 미국으로 피난을 가게 되었습니다. 그러나 미국에서도 남북전쟁이 터져서 테레사의 새 집 근처에서도 치열한 전투가 벌어지곤 했습니다.

어려운 상황 속에서도 테레사는 피아노 연주를 멈추지 않았고, 곧 그녀는 민요에서 소나타, 심포니까지 무엇이든 연주할 수 있는 재능 있는 피아노 소녀로 유명해졌습니다. 테레사는 대극장에서 오케스트라와 합주를 하게 되었으며, 8세 소녀의 놀라운 피아노 연주는 신문기사로 널리 알려졌습니다.

그리고 믿을 수 없는 일이 일어났는데, 테레사의 이야기를 들은 링컨대통령이 그녀를 백악관에서 초청해서 연주해주기를 요청했습니다. 치열한 남북전쟁으로 수많은 군인들이 부상당해 신음했으며, 링컨 대통령도 아들을 질병으로 잃는 개인적인 불행을 겪고 있는 와중에 테레사는 이들의 마음에 위안을 줄 수 있는 연주를 잘 할 수 있을지 걱정이 되었습니다.

긴장된 마음으로 아빠의 손을 꼭 잡고 백악관에 들어선 테레사는 용기를 내어 연주를 시작했습니다만, 곧 피아노의 조율이 전혀 되어 있지 않다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 결국 테레사는 연주를 중단할 수 밖에 없었지만... 링컨 대통령은 자신이 제일 좋아하는 곡인 "Listen to the Mockingbird"를 연주해달라고 요청했습니다. 테레사는 조율이 안된 피아노로 링컨 대통령의 신청곡을 연주하기 시작하고...
