자기가 입을 옷을 직접 고르고 거울에 비춰보고,,, 어른이 보기엔 어울리지 않는데도 고집스럽게 자기걸 고수하는 아이들. 책의 주인공, 유치원생일 듯 보이는 어린 꼬마숙녀 앨러새러 역시 자기스타일에 관한한 만만한 아이가 아니랍니다. 특히 여자아이를 키워본 엄마라면 아이와 자주 이런 마찰을 겪게될텐데요, 책을 넘기면서 ‘우리애랑 똑같네’싶은 생각이 들면서도, 주로는 아이고집을 꺽고 엄마생각대로 옷을 입혀온 건 아닌지 뜨끔한 맘이 들게도 하는 책입니다.

아침에 일어난 앨러새러는 옷장 앞에 서서 옷장 안을 쭈욱 훑어봅니다. 그리곤 머리부터 발끝까지 무엇을 입을까 단번에 정하죠. 분홍색 물방울무늬 바지, 주황색과 초록색이 어우러진 꽃무늬 치마, 보라색 파란색 줄무늬 양말, 노란 신발 그리고 빨간 모자,,,
어쩜 어른이 말리고싶은 구색으로만 일관한 앨러새러, 당연히 엄만 다른 걸 권합니다. 엄만 아이에게 말하죠, 그 옷차림은 너무 화려하니까 말쑥한 파란 원피스와 그에 어울리는 양말, 그리고 하얀 샌들을 신어보라구요. 앨러새러의 대답은 ,,, No!! 그리곤 아까 골랐던 걸 입겠다고 외치죠. 어머나 앨러새러가 좀 시무룩해졌네요.

이번엔 아빠가 나섭니다. 너무 정신없는 거 말고 하얀밑단이 붙은 노란 티셔츠랑 테니스화를 신어보라구요. 앨러새러가 그러자고 할까요? No!! 이번엔 화까지 치밀어오르는 모양이예요. 앨러새러는 주먹을 불끈쥐고 분홍색 물방울무늬 바지, 꽃무늬 치마,,,,,, 빨간 모자를 입겠다고 또랑또랑 말합니다.

그런데 언니까지도 가만히 있질 않네요. 바보같은 그런 거 말고 멜빵바지를 입으라고 하네요. 자기한텐 너무 작아졌으니 동생한테 물려줄 참인가봅니다. 게다가 낡은 부츠를 신으라고 하니 이젠 앨러새러가 더 이상 못참겠는지 품에 안고 있던 야옹이인형까지 내팽겨치며 소리칩니다. No!!

드디어 의지를 직접 보여줄 때가 온 것 같네요. 앨러샐러는 자기가 골랐던 분홍 물방울 바지를 입고 주황초록꽃무늬 치마도 혼자서 입어요. 그리고 보라파랑줄무늬 양말과 노란 신발, 마지막으로 빨간 모자까지 완벽하게 걸칩니다. 짜잔~~ 거울 앞에 선 앨러새러는 자기의 근사한 모습을 보고 바로 이게 딱이라고 흐뭇해합니다.

딩동~~ 친구들이 왔어요. 와우 아주아주 화려하네요. 유유상종이라고 친구들 옷차림도 앨러새러 못지않습니다. 무늬도 색도 가지각색, 도저히 어울릴 것 같지 않은 모자, 안경, 인디언헤어밴드, 썬글라스,,,, 이렇게 멋지게 차려입은 친구들과 둘러앉아 티타임을 우아하게(?) 갖는 앨러세러는 아주 만족스런 표정이네요. 왜 아니겠어요,,, 참 귀엽고 사랑스런 모습입니다.

A junior Diana Vreeland in blue sheep jammies, Ella Sarah coolly surveys her open armoire and announces that she will wear "my pink polka-dot pants, my dress with orange-and-green flowers, my purple-and-blue striped socks, my yellow shoes, and my red hat." Family members try to dissuade her from an outfit that they deem too "dressy" or "fancy" or "silly" (the last comes from an older sister trying to pawn off some hand-me-downs). But Ella Sarah resists their admonitions and proves her sartorial instincts are "just right" when the occasion is a dress-up tea party with her friends. A gifted printmaker, Chodos-Irvine (Apple Pie Fourth of July) uses bright but well-modulated colors, sharply defined shapes and plenty of white space to give the pictures a strong graphic punch and convey a range of emotions. When Ella Sarah's ambitions collide with her mother's disapproval (however mild), Chodos-Irvine shows the confident girl's posture curving into a dejected "S"; when Ella Sarah reaches the breaking point, the illustrator depicts her fury by showing only Ella Sarah's hand on the left, with the toy cat she has thrown, flying across the spread. By conveying her heroine's perspective so convincingly, Chodos-Irvine makes the book's ending a triumph-and one that should strike a chord with dress-up fans everywhere.

In typical toddler fashion, Ella Sarah has her own ideas about what she should wear and persists in her choices despite her family's suggestions. "Her father said, `That outfit is too fancy. Why don't you wear your yellow T-shirt with white shorts, and your tennis shoes?'" Ella Sarah replies with what becomes her refrain. "I want to wear my pink polka-dot pants, my dress with orange-and-green flowers, my purple-and-blue striped socks, my yellow shoes, and my red hat!" At the end, her equally "well-dressed" friends arrive for a tea party. The larger-than-life family members tower over Ella Sarah, with only their torsos and legs showing. The exuberant illustrations, "created using a variety of printmaking techniques," dance and tumble across the pages, adding emotion to her refrain. The vibrant yellows, oranges, pinks, and purples work together surprisingly well-Ella Sarah doesn't look as shocking as one would imagine. This should be a hit at storytime or for one-on-one sharing.

Mom, Dad, and big sister have other ideas for her attire, but Ella Sarah repeats her desired outfit emphatically at each suggestion. When readers see her friends gathered for a tea party, it뭩 clear that they all knew just what they wanted to wear--a riot of mismatched color and pattern. Chodos-Irvine uses printmaking for these fabulously patterned images, where wallpaper, rugs, and toys create wonderful rhythms. Ella Sarah뭩 body language, which goes from determined to dejected to defiant to dogmatic, contrasts with the posturing of her parents and sibling, seen from Ella Sarah뭩 point of view, heads cut off by the picture plane. A wonderfully realized artistic conceit with a storyline guaranteed to tickle the fancy of baby fashionistas and their families.
