1954년 뉴욕 브롱크스에서 푸에르토리코 출신의 가난한 이민자 가정의 딸로 태어난 소냐는
7살때 소아당뇨병에 걸려서 두고두고 고생을 하게 되고,
9살때 아버지가 돌아가시는 불행을 겪게 되었으며,
14살이 되어서야 처음으로 자기 방을 갖게 되었습니다.
뛰어난 학업성적으로 대학은 아이비리그인 프린스턴, 대학원은 최고의 로스쿨인 예일대학을 최우등생으로 졸업했습니다.
대학 졸업후, 변호사, 지방법원과 순회법원 판사, 항소법원 판사를 거쳐 2009년에 오바마대통령에 의해 연방대법관으로 지명되었습니다. 미국 역사상 111번째 대법관이자 히스패닉계로는 최초의 대법관입니다.
