국내에서는 "체스터는 뭐든지 자기 멋대로야"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간된 명작 그림책입니다. 자기 생각과 방식이 뚜렷한 체스터와 윌슨, 릴리가 마치 세쌍둥이처럼 함께 어울리며 성장해 가는 이야기를 작가 특유의 유머와 발랄함으로 그려내고 있습니다.

체스터는 언제나 자신이 정한 규칙과 습관을 따르며 생활합니다. 아침에 일어나면 반드시 침대의 왼쪽으로 내려오며, 샌드위치는 대각선으로 반을 잘라 먹습니다. 뒷주머니에는 항상 일회용 반창고를 넣어다니고, 신발끈은 꼭 이중으로 묶습니다. 체스터와 항상 함께 붙어 다니는 친구 윌슨도 같은 습관을 지니고 있습니다. 둘은 마치 쌍둥이 같이 하는 행동과 생각이 비슷합니다. 그런데 어느날 옆집에 말괄량이 릴리가 이사오면서 이들의 생활에 큰 변화가 일어납니다.

릴리는 팔다리 여기저기에 반창고를 붙이고, 뒷주머니에는 늘 물총을 넣고 다니며, 밖에 나갈 때는 꼭 변장을 하는 그야말로 독특한 아이입니다. 그런 아이가 체스터와 윌슨에게 같이 놀자며 적극적으로 다가오네요. 새 친구가 별로 달갑지 않은 체스터와 윌슨은 릴리를 피해 다닙니다. 그러다 무시무시한 고양이로 변장한 릴리 덕분에 위기를 모면한 후 셋은 서로에 대해 알아가며 세쌍둥이처럼 친하게 지내게 됩니다. 어느 날 빅터가 그 동네로 이사 오기 전까지는 말이죠. 과연 세 친구는 빅터와 친구가 될 수 있을까요?

정해진 틀안에 안주하기 보다는 다양성을 추구하고 새로운 것에 과감히 도전하는 실험정신의 중요성, 그리고 친구간의 우정의 의미를 재미있게 보여줍니다.

Kevin Henkes's charming story (Greenwillow Books, 1988) of two friends who are truly "two peas in a pod" comes to life in this quality production. Chester and Wilson do everything the same way, from cutting sandwiches to playing baseball. Then Lilly, of purple plastic purse fame, moves into the neighborhood. Lilly has her own way of doing things, and Chester and Wilson don't know quite what to make of her until the day she uses one of her disguises to frighten off some misbehaving older boys. Chester and Wilson look at Lilly in a new light, and discover that the three of them have more in common than they previously believed, and that perhaps different ways of doing things are just fine. Narrator Laura Hamilton keeps listeners engaged with her terrific intonation and distinct voice for each character. Background music and sound effects enhance the tale. One side of the recording has page-turn signals to help youngsters read along.
