항해술이 취약했던 1620년. 102명의 청교도들은 신앙의 자유를 찾아 영국을 떠나 메이플라워호에 몸을 싣고 신대륙 아메리카로 건너갔습니다. 그리고 추운 겨울이 찾아오자 식량 부족과 질병 등으로 인해 약 절반이 목숨을 잃었습니다. 혹독했던 겨울이 지나고 봄이 왔을 때 토착 인디언들은 이들에게 옥수수 키우는 법, 물고기 낚는 법, 사냥하는 법 등 이 곳에서 살아남을 수 있는 방법을 가르쳐 주었습니다. 인디언들의 도움으로 낮선 곳에 무사히 정착할 수 있게 된 청교도인들은 가을에 수확을 거둔 후, 인디언들을 초청해서 음식을 나누면서 자신들에게 큰 도움을 준 인디언들과 역경을 이겨내도록 이끌어준 신에게 감사했습니다.
이들이 바로 현대 미국을 탄생시킨 건국 선조(the Piligrim Fathers)들이었으며, 이들이 드렸던 첫 추수 감사절의 벅찬 환희는 단순히 한 나라의 건국 일화나 한 해의 추수의 감사에 그치는 것이 아니라 신앙과 자유의 존엄성을, 그리고 개척자 정신의 고귀함을 보여 줌으로써 후세 사람들에게 깊은 감동을 전해 줍니다.
