서양에서는 어린 아이의 이가 빠졌을 때, 이빨을 베개 밑에 넣고 자면, 밤새 이빨요정(Tooth Fairy)이 와서 이빨을 가져가는 대신에 동전이나 선물을 놓고 가는 풍습이 있습니다.

탈룰라도 원래는 이빨요정이었으나, "이빨거인주식회사"라는 이빨 수거 회사를 차려서 큰 성공을 거뒀습니다. 이 회사의 회장인 된 탈룰라는 오전에는 요가나 필라테스 등 건강을 위해 시간을 투자하거나 치아박물관을 방문하고, 오후에는 직원인 이빨요정들을 교육하는데 시간을 사용합니다. 그리고 때때로 신입사원을 뽑기 위한 면접을 진행하기도 합니다. 이빨을 수거하고 처리하는 일은 정확한 메뉴얼이 작성되어 있어서 직원들은 이에 따라 일을 하면 됩니다.

하지만 탈룰라가 가장 재미있어 하는 일은 이빨이 빠진 아이들의 명단을 들고 밤마다 몰래 아이방에 들어가서 베개밑의 이빨을 회수하고 선물을 놓고 나오는 일입니다. 그런데 어느날 탈룰라는 전례가 없던 일을 겪게 됩니다. 아이의 베개 밑에 이빨 대신에 편지가 놓여 있었는데, 편지에는 부주의로 이빨을 잃어버렸다고 적혀있었습니다. 이빨요정의 일을 하면서 처음으로 이빨 대신에 편지를 받아본 탈룰라는 이런 상황이 메뉴얼북에 적혀있지 않아서 어떻게 처리해야할지 몰랐습니다.

회사로 돌아온 탈룰라는 긴급이사회를 소집하고 이사들의 의견을 물었습니다만, 이사들의 답변도 신통치 않았습니다. 잃어버렸다는 증거가 필요하다는 메모를 남기라는 이사도 있고, 썩은 이빨이나 금니는 얼마를 보상해줘야 하냐는 질문을 하는 이사도 있고, 7명의 이사 중에서 유일하게 남성인 이사는 오늘 이사회에서 성평등 문제를 토론해보자고 하기도 하고...

결국 이사회에서 결론을 내지 못하자, 탈룰라는 자기 나름대로 합리적인 결정을 내립니다. 탈룰라가 내린 결정은...
