메이플이 아직 엄마 뱃속에 있을 때, 엄마와 아빠는 메이플의 탄생을 기념해서 마당에 단풍나무(Maple) 한 그루를 심었습니다. 그리고 메이플이 태어났을 때 자연스럽게 엄마와 아빠는 아기 이름을 메이플(Maple)이라고 지어줬지요.

메이플과 나무는 함께 자랐고, 나무는 메이플의 가장 좋은 친구가 되어 줬지요. 메이플은 나무를 위해 노래도 부르고, 춤도 추고, 추운 계절이 와서 나뭇잎이 다 떨어지면 감기에 들지마라고 자기 옷을 벗어서 나무에 입혀주기도 했습니다. 그리고 메이플이 나무 그늘 밑에 누워 있으면 나무 잎들은 메이플을 위해 살랑살랑 춤을 춰졌습니다.

어느 봄날, 메이플은 자신의 단풍나무 옆에 조그만 버드나무(Willow)가 심겨져 있는 것을 발견했습니다. 그리고 놀랍게도 엄마는 새로운 아기 윌로우를 낳았습니다. 메이플은 언니가 된 거지요. 메이플은 이 세상에서 가장 좋은 언니가 되겠다고 생각합니다. 하지만 아무리 메이플이 아기를 위해 최선을 다해도 아기는 보채고 울 때가 있지요. 그때마다 메이플은 아기를 데리고 단풍나무로 가서 나무 그늘 아래 함께 눕습니다. 그러면 나무는 메이플과 아기를 위해 마치 마법과 같은 일을 해줍니다....

The crispness of Nichols's lush, leafy illustrations on each thick white page helps Maple's adventures around the little sapling stand out. This may be Nichols's debut picture book, but the only thing green about this effort is the perfect shade of a maple leaf.
