국내에서는 "꼬마 비버와 메아리"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간된 명작 그림책입니다. 호수를 배경으로 한 섬세하고 밝은 그림과 외로운 꼬마 비버가 친구를 만나게 되는 따뜻한 이야기는 어린이뿐만 아니라 어른에게도 은은한 감동과 기쁨을 줍니다.

커다란 연못가에서 가족과 친구도 없이 혼자서 지내는 비버는 어느 날 너무 외로워서 연못가에 앉아 큰 소리로 울기 시작했어요. 그런데 비버는 호수 건너편에서 누군가가 같이 우는 것을 들었습니다.

호기심이 생긴 비버는 "Hello"하고 큰 소리로 부르자 건너편에서도 "Hello"하고 답변을 해 왔어요.

"너는 왜 우니?"하고 물으면 호수 반대편에서도 "너는 왜 우니"하고 질문을 해옵니다.

비버는 "나는 너무 외로워. 친구가 필요해"라고 대답하자 건너편에서도 똑같은 대답을 해왔어요. 비버는 건너편의 친구를 만나기로 결심하고 조그만 배를 타고 호수를 건너갑니다. 호수를 건너다가 오리, 수달, 거북이 같은 새로운 친구들을 만나 사귀게 되고, 나이많은 현명한 비버를 만나 호수 건너편에서 대답을 한 것은 메아리라는 것을 알게 되지요...

What is 페이퍼백? 표지가 두꺼운 판지나 보드지가 아닌 비교적 얇은 종이를 사용해서 만든 책이며, 실박음질 대신에 풀로 제본처리하는 경우가 많습니다. 일반적으로 하드커버나 보드북에 비해서 가격이 저렴합니다. 소프트커버로 불리우기도 합니다. 책의 이음새 부분이 접히거나 휘는 내구성이 그리 좋지는 않은 책입니다.

Lonely Little Beaver has no friends. While he is weeping, he hears someone from across the pond weeping too. They talk back and forth, and Little Beaver learns the voice has no friends either. He immediately launches his boat to find the voice. During his search, he meets a duck, an otter, and a turtle, none of whom had been crying, but they all need a friend and want to assist in the search. Soon they meet the wise, old beaver who tells the new found friends that the mysterious voice is the Echo, who is always across the pond. Companionship and kindness flow through the pages of this classic story, and the beautiful illustrations are warm and inviting. Recognized as a "Parents Magazine Best Books of the Year."

A cumulative, didactic tale. Hearing his own cry, ``I need a friend,'' called back from across the pond, Little Beaver sets out to find the creature who shares his problem. As he journeys to find out who was crying, he is joined by an otter, a duck, and a turtle, all of whom also want companionship. Ultimately, they meet a wise old beaver who explains about Echo, and they make Echo sound happy when they discover that they are friends. Little Beaver is a fat, furry little fellow who is apparently intended to look natural, although he has the demeanor of a greeting card creature. This anthropomorphic approach is neither realistic nor convincing in presenting a human dilemma enacted by animals. The lovely soft watercolor scenes bespeak the British artist's experience as a natural-history illustrator. The issue concerning Echo is somewhat confusing, however, and the flat, precious conclusion about friendship is clearly stated but predictable.
