Book Description
Describes the work of John Walsh as he travels the world helping to save animals in Kuwait during the war with Iraq, the Kobe earthqake, and floods in Surinam.
From the Publisher
John Walsh thinks he has the best job there is. He goes where there are bombs and fires. He wades through floods and climbs volcanoes. For the past thirty-five years, he has risked his life to save animals in need. These are the true stories of his brave animal rescues.
Children's Literature
It's always fun when an adult likes his job so much that he practically falls all over himself trying to tell you about it. And for over thirty years, John Walsh has enjoyed wading through creeks, climbing volcanoes, going into fires and bomb sites, and loving (almost) every minute of it. The adventures Goodman tells about are truly amazing. They include animals rescued from a human-caused flood in Suriname, an earthquake-damaged building in Kobe, and a war-torn zoo in Kuwait. We get a little geography lesson here, too. There are just these three rescues, and a good reader will most probably want more. I'd love a list of other sources for this kind of story. The photos are marvelous. It's very easy-to-read, but not at all simple-minded. Goodman's nearly breathless, excited delivery, colorful language, and altogether happy tone as she speaks, as well as the unusual character of the adventures themselves, make this book a treasure.
School Library Journal
On a typical workday, John Walsh, a member of the World Society for the Protection of Animals, might rescue a sloth from a treetop in a flooded jungle in Suriname or a dog from a building about to topple after an earthquake in Japan. This book recounts three of his daring missions. The suspenseful yet informative text and full-color photographs of the actual rescues in progress will draw in even reluctant readers. This is a great choice for booktalks or as a starting point for discussions of geography (a simple map begins each chapter), animals, or current events. |
