행운의 숫자(numbers), 네 잎 클로버(a four-leaf clover),
금 밟지(step on a crack) 말 것, 사다리 아래로 지나지(go under a ladder) 말 것, 검은 고양이(have a black cat cross in front of me), 거울 깨지(breaking a mirror) 말 것, 실내에서 우산 펴지(opening an umbrella in the house) 말 것. 등등.
하지만 선생님은 그러한 미신들은 사실에 근거한 것들이 아니라, 정말 그렇지는 않다(they aren't based on fact, and they aren't real.)고 가르치고 있어요.
그런데, 호박을 영미권에선 과일로 가르치고 있네요.
생물학적으론 명백히 과일(씨를 포함하고 있다)이라고 가르치고 있네요.
식문화로 볼 땐, 나라마다 다를 수도 있겠지만, 채소(가열하고 조리해서 먹는다)로 관습적으로 취급해왔었지만 말이죠.
"'You may think a pumpkin is a vegetable,'"" he said.
"'But it's really a fruit, because it has seeds inside of it.'"
우리들은 보통 채소로 가르치고(정확히는 과일채소라고) 있는거 같더군요.
