Each of these books is part of the "Ready-to-Read" weather series, written at level one. In very simple language, they provide beginning readers with good basics on various aspects of weather. A fact page at the end of each book offers additional interesting information. Rain teaches a simplified version of the water cycle. Wind introduces the idea of the earth spinning and cool and warm air movements. Snow explains how snowflakes form, and Clouds introduces cirrus, stratus, and cumulus clouds. Paula Parker reads each book in a measured, warm voice. Light music and sound effects are included but do not distract from the content. Page-turn signals are optional. Audio quality is excellent, and youngsters will enjoy perusing John Wallace's bold watercolor-and ink illustrations as they read along. Primary teachers will welcome this series for their reading centers.

Wind is a "Level One, Ready-to-Read" book. It is a look at the phenomenon of wind for a very early reader. The Earth is a ball that spins. As the Earth spins the air around it moves, too. Cold air moves down and warm air moves up. This movement causes wind. We use wind to sail boats, fly kites and spin windmills. Some plants use wind to distribute their seeds. Wind can be scary sometimes, like the winds of tornadoes and hurricanes. Wind can also be soft and gentle. The illustrations are very sweet뾩ight and airy watercolor paintings that work especially well with the subject matter. They do a good job of conveying a sense of movement. We can't see wind, only what it does. The text is large and the sentence structure simple for early readers. |
