뉴욕타임즈 베스트셀러인 "Dog Loves Books"의 저자인 Louise Yates가 이번에는 그림 그리기를 좋아하는 개를 통해 어린 독자들을 무한 상상의 세계로 안내합니다.
책을 너무 좋아하는 주인공 개는 결국 서점을 열어서 틈나는 대로 책을 읽고 지냅니다. 그러던 어느날 도라 이모가 보내준 마법의 책을 한 권 받았는데, 그 책에는 아무런 글이나 그림이 없는 빈 종이만 있었습니다. 주인공 개는 이 책 위에 문을 그리고, 그 문을 열고 들어가서 놀라운 모험의 세계를 만들어 갑니다. 우선 친구들을 그리고, 그 친구들은 살아서 움직이면서 자신들만의 그림을 그려 나갔습니다. 주인공 개는 기차를 그린 후, 그 기차에 친구들을 모두 태우고 달려 가다가, 이번에는 기차에서 내려서 푸른 바다와 조그만 배를 그렸습니다. 모두들 그 배를 타고 무인도에 도착했습니다만, 오리가 괴물을 그리는 바람에 주인공 개와 친구들은 괴물에게 쫓기는 신세가 됩니다. 간신히 문밖으로 나와서 다시 현실 세계로 돌아온 주인공 개는 책 속의 친구들을 괴물로 부터 안전하게 구해낼 방법을 생각해 냅니다...

Yates’ bibliophile star of Dog Loves Books (2010) is back, this time in an ode to drawing. When Dog receives a blank book from his aunt Dora, he is initially unsure of its purpose - luckily there’s a note of explanation, and Dog immediately pulls out his pens, pencils, and brushes and sets to work. As with the best artwork, Dog’s efforts are transformative: the door he draws opens, and he steps through it. There, he draws a stickman (kids will relate), and they doodle together. When the page is brimming over with stars and curlicues, they turn the page to a blank one and create new friends - a pink owl, a striped duck, and a more traditional-looking orange crab. The quintet draw themselves into adventures until the duck creates something “that spoils everything,” and they need to find their way out of the sketchbook. Dog, with his floppy ears and irrepressible love of books and creativity, is a charmer, and little kids will find his enthusiasm inspiring. Storytime and activity possibilities abound.
