A father and his four children--a toddler, a preschool boy and two older girls--go on the traditional bear hunt based on the old camp chant: ``We're going to catch a big one. / What a beautiful day! / We're not scared. / Oh-oh! Grass! / Long, wavy grass. / We can't go over it. / We can't go under it. / Oh, no! / We've got to go through it!'' The family skids down a grassy slope, swishes across a river, sludges through mud and, of course, finally sees the bear, who chases them all back to their home. It's a fantastic journey--was it real or imagined?--with the family's actions (and interaction) adding to the trip a goodnatured, jolly mood. The design of the oversized volume alternates black-and-white drawings with gorgeous full-color watercolor paintings, which Oxenbury uses to wonderful effect. Readers accustomed to her board books will find a different style here, of puddled colors and sweeps of light and shadow. The scale of the pictures and the ease with which the text can be shouted aloud make this ideal for families or groups to share.
Children's Literature
There are some books that instantly become favorites with the preschool crowd and the parents and teachers who work with them. We're Going on a Bear Hunt is definitely one of them. Publishers sometimes try to find other avenues where they can market the book and often turn to audio books. A wonderful alternative, an audio book allows children to listen to the story independently again and again which helps them to make the speech to print match as reading begins. This particular audio book format is something of a disappointment, however. Rather than providing the means for children to revisit the story independently, the producers of this CD focused on providing the background noises that one might encounter when going on a bear hunt. For example, there is the splooch sound of a boot emerging from wet mud, the swish of grass as the characters walk through the knee-high field, etc. While this is all well and good, the end product is a CD that is usable only in concert with parent and child and even then is ineffective. The CD asks the child to "repeat after me" but never provides any modeling. There were many such good ideas but they were not fully developed. A better format would have been a package containing the book and a CD that offered extensions for learning. That way, parents or preschool teachers would have a resource to truly go beyond the book. A simple audio book with accompanying tape would have been sufficient.
This delightful picture book makes a new appearance as a board book, and it is wonderful. The same mix of black and white illustrations accompanied by a rhythmic text, which alternate with full-color spreads full of onomatopoeia, are still there as the family ventures through fields across streams and through icy landscapes until they meet up with a bear in its cave. It's a fantasy adventure that ends with the whole family snuggled under the comforter in the parents' big bed, and now the board book crowd will get to enjoy the fun.

일러스트 스타일, 글의 구성, 내용으로 느낄 수 있는 긴장감, 그리고 반전.
특히 CD는 한참을 혼자서도 흥얼거리게 할만큼 아주 인상깊고 강렬합니다.

돌이 좀 지나 아이에게 보여주니 '가족'에 관심을 갖더군요. 아빠, 엄마, 오빠, 언니, 아기로 구성되어 '가족' 이라는 개념을 설명해주기에도 너무 좋았습니다.
그때는 자신을 '아기'라고 말했지요.
좀 더 지나 테디베어를 접한 후 아이는 곰에 관심을 가졌습니다.
곰이 귀엽고 앙증맞은 것으로만 알던 아이가 처음으로 곰이 '무서운 존재' 라는 느낌을 준 것 같습니다.
아, 또..
장면장면마다 걷지 못하는 아기를 데리고 있는 사람이 다 다른걸 알 수 있어요.
저희 아이는 I Spy 처럼 아기를 누가 안고 있는지 찾아내기도 했습니다.
지금은 아이가 4살인데 다시 한번 보여줘야 겠네요. 이젠 어디에 관심을 가질지 궁금합니다.
이젠 장면, 의성어, 반복 구문을 신경써서 읽어주어야 겠네요.

글밥이 조금 있는 편이에요. 소리 표현을 제외한 부분은 한 페이지에 4줄 정도의 글밥이 있어서

글밥이 조금 있는 편이에요. 소리 표현을 제외한 부분은 한 페이지에 4줄 정도의 글밥이 있어서
너무 어린 아이들에게는 조금 무리가 될 수도 있습니다.
저는 만 3돌 아이에게 한글책을 먼저 보여준 후 영어책을 보여주니 반응이 아주 좋더군요.
이 월령 이전의 아이들은 그림나 먼저 보여주신다는 생각으로 보여 주시다가
나중에 한글책과 함께 보여주셔도 좋을 것 같습니다.

이 책은 워낙에 우리나라에서 인기가 좋아서 작년엔가에는
팝업북으로 나오기도 했어요 그치만 팝업북은 무척 비싸요^^;

씨디와 테잎이 같이 있어서 테잎은 토이카세트에서 놀때 들려주는데요
곰이 나오는 장면에서는 무섭다고 끄라고 막 그래요 ㅋㅋ
한글판부터 들려주고 영어판을 접해서 내용을 다 알기때문에
운율이 있는 장면에서 아주 만족입니다
한글판에서는 운율이 있기는 해도 노래가 없기때문에
어떻게 불러줘야할지 몰라 우리집에 왜 왔니의 운율을 따서 노래로 불러줬었거든요
사도 후회는 안하는 책입니다
테잎이랑 씨디도 있는데 가격도 저렴하구요
