Kids and parents learn the basics—the gear, how to begin skating and, most importantly, how to stop without causing severe injury to oneself. As the book says—balance is key and when learning to skate, there will probably be many falls—hence the need for knee and elbow pads and a helmet. The colorful cartoons depict multiracial boys and girls of varying athletic abilities. The unique close-ups and unusual perspectives add interest. The only drawback is a rather uneven style due to the occasional rhyming text. Nevertheless, this title will help beginners learn the basics of the sport.
