베스트셀러 그림책인 Little Blue Truck 이야기입니다.

시골 농장에서 일하는 조그만 파란색 트럭 블루는 농작물을 팔기 위해 대도시에 갔습니다. 높은 고층빌딩들이 숲을 이루고 있는 대도시는 멋져 보였습니다만, 도로를 달리는 차들은 모두들 너무 조급하게 서두르기만 하네요.

남들보다 조금이라도 빨리 가고 앞서 가기 위해 양보를 하지 않고 빵빵 경적을 울려대는 자동차들...

2층버스는 큰 몸집을 믿고 블루에게 길을 비키라고 소리치고,
식료품 트럭은 경적을 울려대며 블루보다 앞서 가려고 하고,
경찰차는 싸이렌을 울리면서 모든 차들에게 비키라고 소리치고,
길거리 청소차는 먼지를 일으키며 블루에게 빨리가라고 채근댑니다.
그리고 시장을 태우고 있는 길다란 리무진차는 자기가 가장 중요한 차니까 옆으로 길을 비키라고 큰 소리치네요.

모든 차들이 서로 앞서가려고 하다보니 길거리는 더욱 혼잡해지고 결국 모두가 옴짝달싹할 수 없게 됩니다.
그 와중에 택시는 급하게 끼어들기를 하다가 끼~익하고 브레이크를 밟지 않았으면 블루와 충돌할 뻔 했습니다.

깜짝놀란 블루는 차들에게 한마디 합니다. 한번에 한대씩 차례차례가는 것이 올바른 운전법이라고...

자기가 가장 중요한 차라고 뻐기던 리무진은 결국 엔진이 과열되어서 연기가 나게 되고, 리무진에서 내린 시장님은 블루의 짐칸에 올라서서 도로 위에서 꽉 막혀 있는 차들에게 블루가 말했던 "한번에 한대씩 차례차례가는 것"이 정답이라고 연설을 합니다. 그리고 모든 차들은 한 줄로 블루 뒤를 차례로 따라 가라고 말합니다.

모든 차들이 서로 양보하며 한대씩 차례로 블루 뒤를 따라 가자 그제서야 도로는 뚫리게 되고 일렬로 나아가는 차량들의 모습이 마치 시가 행진을 하는 것 같습니다. 이 모습을 본 모든 사람들이 차들을 끌고가는 블루에게 손을 흔들고 박수를 치며 환호를 보냅니다...

Little Blue Truck rides in rhyme again, this time carrying crates of lettuce to a metropolitan market. His bug-eyed headlights show appreciation for the city views, as well as discomfort when the faster-paced vehicles harass him. From a double-decker bus to the mayor's limousine, traffic irritably jams into a crunch intensified by the limo engine's demise. The portly, gray-haired mayor uses Little Blue as a podium, instructing citizens to follow the truck's advice to travel "one at a time." The resulting courtesy creates a smooth flow, even when a marching band joins the line. Everyone cheers for the little truck, who leads the way with the mayor as his passenger. McElmurry's gouache scenes are spot-on. Simple compositions in calming indigo and cream in the country starkly contrast with the jam-packed city scenes where a crush of buildings barely shows the sky. The urbanites are a rich mix of ethnicity and purpose: coffee drinkers, construction workers, dog walkers, briefcase carriers, they all pound the pavement. The tale is a fine illustration for classes studying urban and rural settings, and the simple plot is a treat for even very young listeners.
