마을의 책들이 모두 사라지자, 이상한 소문이 퍼졌어요. 침대 밑에 책도둑이 산다고 말이에요. 엘리자는 책도둑이 누군지 꼭 알아내고 싶었어요. 엘리자는 책도둑을 만나기 위해 꾀를 내었어요. 책들을 잔뜩 쌓아놓고 숨어서 지켜보기로 했어요. 몇 시간을 기다렸지만, 책도둑은 나타나지 않았어요. 엘리자는 그만 깜빡 잠이 들고 말았어요.
바로 그때, 엘리자의 방을 가로지를 만큼 커다란 그림자가 슬며시 다가왔어요. 엘리자는 쿵쾅거리는 마음을 달래며 책도둑의 얼굴을 보기 위해 창문을 활짝 열었어요. 그리고는 책도둑에게 이렇게 소리쳤어요.
“우리 책을 훔쳐 가지 마! 당장 그만 둬! 훔친 책을 돌려줘!”

엘리자가 찾아낸 책도둑은 믿기 어려울 만큼 작은 녀석이었어요.
엘리자는 꼬마 책도둑을 방으로 데려와 무릎에 앉혀놓고 책꽂이에 있는 책을 마음대로 가져가면 안 된다고 조곤조곤 말했어요.
꼬마 책도둑은 눈물을 흘리며 책 읽어줄 사람이 아무도 없다고 말했어요. 엘리자는 쓸쓸한 꼬마 책도둑 때문에 마음이 많이 아팠어요. 엘리자는 꼬마 책도둑도 도와주기 위해, 마을의 책들을 모두 제자리에 돌려놓을 멋진 계획을 세웠어요. 꼬마 책도둑은 엘리자의 도움으로 모든 책들을 제자리에 가져다 놓을 수 있었지요. 엘리자는 다음 날 마을 친구들에게 꼬마 책도둑이 훔친 책을 돌려주기 위해 얼마나 애를 썼는지 말해 주었어요.

버로우 다운 마을에 다시 평화가 찾아왔어요. 침대 밑에 책도둑이 산다는 이상한 소문도 없어졌어요. 그리고 꼬마 책도둑에게도 행복한 일이 생겼어요. 이 집 저 집에서 꼬마 책도둑을 위해 책을 읽어주기 시작했거든요. 이제 버로우 다운 마을에는 책을 읽어줄 사람이 없어서 혼자 쓸쓸하게 밤을 보내는 친구들이 하나도 없대요. 엄마 아빠가 읽어주는 이야기를 들으며 모두들 편안하게 잠자리에 들었답니다.
