아마도 미국에서 가장 성공한 한국인 Illustrator 중의 한 명인 유태은씨의 독특한 리놀륨 블럭인쇄 기법이 돋보이는 그림책입니다. 유태은씨의 데뷔작이었던 The Little Red Fish이 미국 평론가의 절찬을 받은데 이어 이 책도 큰 반향을 불러 일으켰습니다.
오직 마녀만이 빗자루를 타고 하늘을 날 수 있습니다만, 소녀는 너무나도 하늘을 날고 싶어 합니다.모두가 잠자리에 들었을 때, 소녀는 빗자루를 들고 조용히 밖으로 나갑니다. 그 뒤에는 검은 고양이 한 마리가 졸졸 따라 가고, 누나가 밖으로 나가는 것을 본 동생도 몰래 누나 뒤를 따라 갑니다.
밖에는 달이 빛나고, 박쥐들은 높은 음 소리를 내면서 날고 있으며, 올빼미가 큰 눈을 반짝이고 있네요. 소녀는 현관 베란다의 울타리에 올라가서 빗자루를 가랑이 사이에 낀 후 함차게 하늘로 날아 오르지만.... 결과는 땅바닥에 꽈당... 덕분에 마당에 잇던 호박들이 산산조각이 나버렸네요.
보다 못한 동생이 빗자루를 들고 누나에게 하늘을 나는 법을 가르쳐 주네요. 달을 향해서 하나, 둘, 셋, 넷 숫자를 세어 보라고...
소녀는 빗자루에 검은 고양이를 태운 후 동생이 가르쳐 준 대로 해보자 갑자기 온 몸이 하늘로 슈~웅 날아 오르네요. 소녀는 높이 높이 날아 올라 밤하늘의 비행을 만끽합니다.

This sophisticated picture book is rich with imagination. When the lure of the moon on Halloween night is too much for a young girl in a witch costume, she sneaks out of the house, mounts her broom, and takes a tumble. But with determination and her little brother’s encouragement, she tries again, and flies far and high through the sky before being welcomed back to earth by her family. The text is a sestina poem, a nonrhyming form developed in the thirteenth century and composed of six six-line stanzas followed by a three-line stanza.The real magic here is the linoleum block print illustrations, which, with a rustic color palette of green, brown, and black, evoke a quaint style and rural setting, while echoing the dreamy mood in the words: “Hold tight to your broom / and float past the stars, / and turn to the heavens and soar. / For only a witch can fly past the moon.” More personal, quiet, and transcendent than most Halloween books, this is not a call to witchcraft, but rather to following one’s heart. |
