어느날 토끼 가족이 집에 돌아왔을 때, 현관 문 앞에 바구니가 놓여 있었어요. 그리고 그 바구니 안에는 아기 늑대가 있었지요. 엄마와 아빠 토끼는 귀여운 아기 늑대를 아들로 입양하고 이름을 울피라고 지었지요. 하지만 졸지에 누나가 된 이 집 딸 도트는 한 눈에 아기 늑대가 언젠가는 자기 가족들을 모두 잡아 먹을 거라고 생각했어요. 하지만 엄마 아빠는 도트가 하는 걱정은 아랑곳하지 않은 채 아기늑대 울피에게 폭 빠져 있을 뿐이었습니다. 먹성이 좋아 뭐든지 먹어치우는 울피는 쑥쑥 자랐고, 이제는 엄마 아빠보다 더 크게 자랐어요. 토끼 가족의 주식인 홍당무도 울피가 모두 먹어치우는 바람에 결국 바닥나고 말았습니다.

엄마와 아빠는 도트와 울피에게 홍당무를 사오라고 심부름을 보냈어요. 가게에 도착했을 때, 울피가 갑자기 으르렁거리며 입을 쪼악 벌리네요. 도트는 드디어 자신이 늑대에게 잡혀먹힐 시간이 되었다고 생각했어요. 하지만 그것은 오해였어요. 도트를 잡아 먹으려고 하는 것은 커다란 곰이었어요. 곰은 으르렁거리던 울피를 잡아서 한 입에 먹어치우려고 했지요. 도트는 이 틈을 타서 도망갈 수 있었어요. 하지만 도트는 도망가는 대신에 용감하게 곰에게 대들었지요. 자신은 배고픈 토끼여서 곰을 발가락부터 모조리 먹어버리겠다고 엄포를 놓으면서요.

결국 겁에 질린 곰은 도망을 가고, 울피는 자신을 구해 준 용감한 토끼 누나 도트를 꼭 껴안았어요...

어느 날 갑자기 나타난 동생이라는 낯선 존재를 아이들은 어떻게 받아들일까요? 엄마와 아빠 그리고 나, 이대로도 완벽했던 가족에 갑자기 끼어든 동생이 마냥 반갑지는 않겠지요. 나와 너무 다르지만 내가 가진 모든 것을 함께해야 하는 ‘동생’은 아이들에게 경계해야 할 두려움의 대상이 되기도 합니다. 동생과 내가 진짜 가족이 되기까지 아이들에게도 충분한 시간이 필요하다는 것은 물론이고요.

이 책은 꼬마 토끼가 갑자기 생긴 늑대 동생을 가족으로 받아들이기까지의 과정을 유쾌한 이야기 속에 담아낸 그림책입니다.
