글을 쓰는 앤디와 그림을 그리는 테리는 13층 나무 집에 삽니다. 나무 집에는 게임방, 수영장, 수족관, 레모네이드 분수, 덩굴 그네 등 신나는 놀거리로 가득합니다. 어느 날, 앤디는 테리가 노랗게 칠한 이웃집 고양이 실키가 새처럼 날개가 돋아 날아가는 장면을 목격합니다. 곧 실키의 주인 질이 찾아오고, 두 사람은 모른 척합니다. 그때, 출판사 사장의 전화가 걸려옵니다. 사장은 내일까지 원고를 안 주면 가만두지 않겠다고 협박합니다. 그런데 마음 급한 앤디와 달리 테리는 바다원숭이 알을 부화시키는 엉뚱한 일에 집착합니다.

글을 쓰고 그림을 그릴라치면 계속해서 모험거리(?)가 생겨납니다. 알에서 깨어난 ‘인어 아가씨(실은 바다 괴물이다!)’에게 잡아먹힐 뻔하고, 원숭이 무리에게 공격당하고, 거대 고릴라에게 쫓기기도 합니다. 거대 고릴라의 위협이 극에 달한 순간, ‘고나리아(고양이+카나리아)’가 되어 날아갔던 실키가 다른 고나리아들을 데려와 앤디와 테리를 도와줍니다. 질은 마침 새를 키우고 싶었는데 실키가 새 겸 고양이가 되었다며 무척 고마워합니다. 마침내, 앤디와 테리는 자신들이 겪은 일을 써서 원고를 완성해 출판사에 전해 줍니다.
