This large pop-up book of eight spreads presents characters from Marvel Comics?X-Men series. See these popular heroes in an exciting all-new, all-different format, popping-up from the pages of a hardcover book? There is Professor Xavier who runs a school for good mutants who work on behalf of mankind by using their ability to control the various visionic fields of their minds. There is Cyclops whose mutant powers erupt from his eyes as uncontrollable blasts,?and, as he pops-up from the first page, so does his mutant eye power. It is red. Then there is Storm, who controls the weather. It is not clear just how she does it, but her emotions have something to do with it, and she can fly. Magneto also pops up. He's a bad guy who used to be a Professor Xavier's friend, but is now out to destroy mankind. You'll meet Night Crawler, Iceman, Wolverine, Banshee, Cerebro, and Colossus. There are little snippets of comic strips included, but never a complete adventure; still, vivid color, fantastic imagination, crowded pages, and a sense of energy ride the pages. The pop-ups seem to explode from the center of each page. Unfortunately, the designers decided to make the book itself an irregular shape (smaller at the bottom than the top) which means it will not line up with others when it is shelved. POW! Give this similarly designed companion to The Amazing Spiderman Pop-Up (Candlewick, 2007) high marks for visual impact. Depicted in saturated colors and aggressive poses, Wolverine, Banshee, Storm, Nightcrawler, and other X-Men rear up at each page turn to battle Magneto or another member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Each major mutant on either side comes with a sliding panel of background information ("Colossus: Weight: 250 lbs. or 500 lbs. [transformed]") and-often behind a flap or slightly behind a raised figure to enhance the overall three-dimensionality of each tableau-several sequential panels of backstory or action. Trimmed to a trapezoidal shape, and featuring such unusual special effects as a red plastic "beam" that shoots out of Cyclops's eye as one spread opens, this gallery of superheroes (and villains) will stand out on shelves or in displays.
