Would-be cowpokes should hanker to read this coming-of-age story. Kenny yearns to join his dad and the hard-riding cowboys on their Western ranch. He's tired of hearing their typically grown-up response, ``Someday you'll ride.'' He practices his equestrian skills on a trio of cantankerous mounts--a goose, a sheep, and a calf. His mother decides he's old enough, teaches him the basics, and she and Kenny both join the men on the roundup. The resolution won't surprise many readers, but they'll feel satisfied by the boy's triumph. The soft watercolors in Western tones tell the story independently of the text. The ranch's critters and Kenny's episodes come to life, with Himler portraying the boy's wild rides and obvious pleasure in his developing horsemanship skills. |
