온갖 상품들이 가득한 슈퍼에 가서 무엇을 해야 하는지를 어린 아이의 관점으로 보여주는 책입니다
오늘은 엄마와 함께 슈퍼마켓으로 장을 보러 가는 날입니다. 나는 엄마를 도와서 쇼핑 카트를 끌고 다니며 필요한 것들을 카트에 담습니다.
다양한 고기들을 카트에 담습니다. 저녁에 먹을 닭고기, 내일 먹을 햄버거, 수요일에 먹을 돼지고기...
야채와 과일도 담습니다. 양파, 상추, 포도, 오렌지, 당근, 사과, 그리고 감자...
식빵과 피넛버터도 빼놓을 수 없지요.
그리고 다양한 낙농제품들도 삽니다. 우유, 버터, 달걀, 치즈. 엄마는 갈색 계란을 좋아하지요.
생필품도 구입합니다. 세탁세제, 주방세제, 화장실용 두루마리 휴지와 주방용 종이타올, 화장지, 커피와 차...
카트가 거의 가득 찼지만 빼먹어서는 안될 것들이 있습니다. 밀가루, 설탕, 베이킹파우더, 바닐라, 노란 초, 설탕 스프링클... 이것들은 바로 내일 내 생일에 먹을 케익을 만드는 재료들입니다.
마지막으로 내가 가장 좋아하는 아이스크림도 카트에 담은 후 계산대로 갑니다. 엄마가 계산을 마친 후, 점원은 우리가 산 물건들을 갈색 종이백에 넣어줍니다.
집에 돌아와서 엄마가 슈퍼에서 산 음식과 물건들 정리하는 것을 도와준 후, 엄마와 함께 맛있는 케익을 만듭니다...
1979년에 처음 출간된 책입니다만, 현재의 슈퍼마켓 상황에 맞게 그림과 내용을 존면 수정한 책입니다.

First published in 1979 as The Supermarket, this book has an updated text and new artwork. A boy and his mother go to the grocery store, but this is not just any shopping trip. They buy fruits, vegetables, meat, toilet paper, eggs, and bread, but they are also getting the ingredients for his birthday cake. "Uh-oh! We almost forgot the little sugar sprinkles. But I remembered," he exclaims. The well-written narration explains their trip from start to finish, including how the checkout line works. The brightly colored gouache illustrations on white backgrounds show the child helping to fill the cart and feature such items as produce and a container of ice cream alone on the page, making identification easy. This is a fun, educational read-aloud.

Rockwell has created new illustrations and tweaked the text for her 1997 book The Supermarket. Although the straightforward scenes depicting a young boy and his mother grocery shopping are only slightly changed, the style of the art is looser, and the colors are brighter and richer. Subtle changes in the boy’s narration, mostly naming the items he and his mother purchase, include an indication that “Mommy always gets the green kind” of detergent (although, as in the original edition, their groceries go into paper bags rather than reusable bags). The story climaxes with the boy and his mother making and decorating the boy’s birthday cake with items purchased at the store. A new crop of children will enjoy this quiet, familiar outing just as others have for many years. For children a little older, Supermarket (2001), by Kathleen Krull, presents an in-depth look at all aspects of supermarkets. |
