Any child who strongly resists school will find an advocate in young Honor Brown. "My teacher is a warty toad!/ My classroom is a hole!" she wails in this aria of woe, from the team behind I Want to Be a Cowgirl and the Professor Xargle series. "The cafeteria ladies feed us worms,/ And rabbit poo, and coal!" Ross clearly relishes this catalogue of horrors; his crisp watercolor-and-ink spot illustrations dutifully chronicle classmates who pose as pirates, a wading pool filled with killer sharks, and a disciplinary policy that advocates throwing students off the roof. But despite what the narrator would like the world to believe about her school, Ross serves up the macabre doings with a cheery wink-there's no mistaking Honor Brown for one of Edward Gorey's beleaguered Gashlycrumb Tinies. Youngsters will grasp from the get-go that she's pushing the envelope with her exaggerations, but they'll identify with and chuckle at her sense of drama.

Honor Brown, a wildly imaginative girl, gives a litany of reasons for hating school. Facing forward with arms folded on the cover, she has a devil's tail poking out from her skirt and horns sticking up from her hat. In the rhyming text, an unidentified narrator probes to find out why the child abhors school; the queries are followed by Honor's vividly detailed replies. She explains: "My teacher is a warty toad!/My classroom is a hole!/The cafeteria ladies feed us worms,/And rabbit poo, and coal!" The teaching methods are unorthodox: "They throw us out of windows,/And they make us walk on glass./I've heard they cut your head off/If you're talking during class." However, although she has hated school for years, on the day that she can leave, she cries and proclaims, "I'll really miss it, though." Left unanswered: What is it that actually set the child off on her rant and rage? Rendered in pen, ink, and watercolor, the bright, energetic cartoons convey Honor's jaunty antics. Filled with hairy monsters and unappealing-looking faculty members, the artwork provides the perfect accompaniment to the exaggerated humor of the text. This amusing story is a great anecdote for one of those bad days at school.

Never have the horrors of school been more forcefully, or adroitly, expressed. Why does young Honor Brown hate school? "My teacher is a warty toad! / My classroom is a hole! / The cafeteria ladies feed us worms, / and rabbit poo, and coal!" Is it really that bad? Yes, the teachers "throw us out of windows, / And make us walk on glass. / I've heard they cut your head off / If you're talking during class." All of this receives explicit expression in Ross's loosely inked scenes as, clad in tartan skirts and floppy hats, or the equivalent uniforms for boys, Honor and her classmates suffer or inflict each torture with uproarious glee or dismay. Of course, when it's time to graduate, Honor tearfully declares that she's really going to miss it all. Willis will have readers or listeners rolling in the aisles-and what a refreshing twist on all of those blandly reassuring "First Day of School" stories. |
