Book Description
A funny, sympathetic antidote to worry from a Hans Christian Andersen Medalist.
Billy worries about everything, from shoes that might march out the window to giant birds that might carry him away. One night on a visit to Grandma's, Billy is so anxious that he can't sleep. But Grandma has just the thing for a boy like Billy - tiny, colorful worry dolls, made to do his worrying for him. That night when Billy puts the dolls under his pillow, he sleeps like a log. But soon it dawns on Billy that something is not quite right - now he has all those worry dolls to worry about! Leave it to Anthony Browne, with his surreal illustrations and a final clever twist, to come up with a solution that puts Billy at ease at last.

Publishers Weekly
Browne (Willy the Champ) here offers another satisfyingly wry take on the trials of childhood. At the tale's center is chronic worrier Billy, whose oversize ears, middle part and festive sweater call to mind Browne's popular chimp, Willy. Billy's nighttime worries emerge in monochromatic framed images with humorous surrealistic flair. As he worries about hats, chapeaux of various styles hover over his bed; when he worries about shoes, a parade of pairs of shoes exits out the window; and water falls from the ceiling and surrounds his bed when he worries about rain. His parents try unsuccessfully to calm Billy's fears. But when his worries keep him awake at his grandma's house (Browne indicates the boy's growing anxiety with a portrait of the boy in bed, dominated by light blue and sepia tones and patterned wallpaper that suggests Rorschach shapes), she comes up with a solution. The wise woman gives him six tiny worry dolls that will "do all the worrying for you while you sleep." This works like a charm until the earnest lad starts worrying about the worry dolls. The hero inventively solves this problem, and the author wraps up with a note on the significance of worry dolls, which originated in Guatemala. The festive rainbow hues of the dolls' clothing effectively contrast with the somber shades of the art depicting the boy's worries. An entertaining, comforting bedtime read-aloud.

Children's Literature
The cover tells us this is a story "for worriers everywhere," and when we see the worry doll peeking out of an open box on the title page, we know for sure that Billy is a worrier. As with most worriers, Billy is afflicted by this at bedtime. Browne illustrates his worries in gray tones to distinguish them from Billy's reality. Although his father and mother try to reassure him by saying it is just his imagination and they won't let anything hurt him, it is his grandmother who helps him overcome his worries and his feelings of silliness at being worried about staying at other people's houses. Grandmother tells him she felt the same way as a child, and she gives him a set of worry dolls. Soon, Billy begins to worry about those worry dolls who have taken on all his worries. Grandmother is wise, however. She encourages Billy to make more worry dolls. He has taken the situation into his own hands-literally-and overcomes his problem. Browne's deft touch in both the text and illustrations makes this a good choice for worrywarts everywhere.

Children's Literature
"Billy used to be a bit of a worrier." Many things worry him, from hats and clouds to giant birds that might carry him away. His mom and dad try to comfort and reassure him, in vain. Finally, one sleepless night at his grandma's, Billy tells her about it. She gives him tiny worry dolls. If he tells them his worries, she says, they will worry for him so he can sleep. For a while, the dolls do their work, and Billy sleeps well. But then he starts to worry again. It doesn't seem fair to the dolls to give them all his worries. How Billy solves this problem makes for a satisfying, happy ending. Using watercolors and colored pencil, Browne sets Billy, a slight boy in knee socks and short pants, in a sparse bedroom for his series of worries. The threatening objects are visualized in shades of gray as opposed to the other illustrations in color: a dozen assorted hats suspended over him, or pairs of shoes marching across the floor, or a giant bird flying off with him. To increase the spookiness, the wallpaper changes patterns. But finally, the dolls in their colorful Guatemalan costumes, fill the pages and drive the worries away. A note adds information about worry dolls. Fans of Browne's other work may recognize Billy's vest.
