지구에 온 어린 왕자는 건드리기만 하면 자기가 태어난 땅으로 돌아가게 한다는 뱀을 만나는데 뱀의 수수께끼 같은 말에 어리둥절해 합니다. 그리고 많은 장미꽃을 만나 자신의 꽃이 유일한 것이 아니었음을 깨닫고 슬퍼하기도 합니다. 여우와의 만남은 '길들임'에 대해 가르쳐줍니다. '길들임'이란 과정을 통해 두 존재는 서로에게 의미가 있는 존재가 되는 것이죠. 여우와 작별인사를 나눌 때 여우는 가장 중요한 것은 마음으로만 보이고 길들인 것은 끝까지 책임져야 함을 일러줍니다. 어린 왕자가 지구에 온 지 1년이 다 되어 그의 별이 다시 같은 위치에 있을 때 어린 왕자는 '나'를 만나게 된 것이죠. 어린 왕자는 뱀의 도움을 받아 자신의 별로 돌아가고 `나'도 비행기 수리를 다 마치고 집으로 돌아오게 됩니다.

ANTOINE DE SAINT-EXUPERY (1900-1944) was born in Lyon, France. He took his first flight at the age of eleven, and became a pilot at twenty-six. He was a pioneer of international commercial aviation and flew in the Spanish Civil War and World War II. His writings include The Little Prince, Wind, Sand and Stars, and Southern Mail. In 1944, while serving with a French air aquadron on a reconnaissance mission, his plane disappeared over the Mediterranean. |
