옛날 중국에서는 첫째 아들을 귀하게 여겨 아주 긴 이름을 지어주곤 했습니다. 어느 산골마을에 어머니와 두 아들이 살고 있었는데 둘째 아들은 "챙"이라는 아주 짧은 이름을 지어준 반면에, 첫째 아들에게는 "티키 티키 템보 - 노 사 렘 보 - 차리 바리 루치 - 핍 페리 펨보"라는 기나긴 이름을 지어줬습니다. 이 긴 이름의 뜻은 "이 넓고 넓은 세상에서 가장 훌륭한 사람"이라네요.
어느 날 형제는 어머니의 말을 안 듣고 우물가에서 장난을 하다가, 그만 동생 챙이 우물에 빠지는 일이 벌어집니다. 형 티키 티키 템보는 엄마에게 달려가서 이 사실을 알리고, 사다리를 갖고 있는 노인의 도움을 받아 무사히 동생을 구해줍니다.
그런데 몇달이 지난 후, 이번에는 형이 우물에 빠지는 일이 발생합니다. 놀란 동생 챙은 엄마에게 달려가서 "티키 티키 템보 - 노 사 렘 보 - 차리 바리 루치 - 핍 페리 펨보"가 우물에 빠졌다고 알리려고 했습니다만, 이름이 너무 길어서 엄마는 챙이 무슨 말을 하는지 잘 알아 듣지를 못하고, 동생 챙은 몇번 형 이름을 외치다가 나중에는 이름 순서가 뒤죽박죽이 되고...
긴 이름을 운율에 맞춰서 읽으면 재미있습니다.
이 사건 이후로 중국인들은 아이 이름을 짧게 짓게 되었다고 하네요...

표지가 두꺼운 판지나 보드지가 아닌 비교적 얇은 종이를 사용해서 만든 책이며, 실박음질 대신에 풀로 제본처리하는 경우가 많습니다. 일반적으로 하드커버나 보드북에 비해서 가격이 저렴합니다. 소프트커버로 불리우기도 합니다. 책의 이음새 부분이 접히거나 휘는 내구성이 그리 좋지는 않은 책입니다.
