현자의 가르침으로 깨달음을 얻게 되는 한 부부의 이야기를 서술한 중국의 전래동화입니다.
밍 루와 부인은 산 아래에서 삽니다. 부부는 자신의 집을 사랑하지만 산을 싫어합니다. 걸핏하면 돌이 떨어져 지붕을 상하게 하고 산 때문에 해가 떠도 춥기 때문이죠. 산의 그림자 때문에 뜰의 꽃이나 식물도 잘 자라지 않아요. 마침내 밍 루는 산을 옮길 방법을 물으러 마을에 사는 현자에게 찾아가기로 했습니다. 현자의 첫번째 조언대로 크고 굵은 나무를 잘라 산의 옆을 밀어보았지만 아무 소용이 없었어요. 다시 현자의 두번째 조언대로 팬과 솥을 치며 큰 소리를 질렀지만 산은 꿈쩍도 하지 않았어요. 다시 현자의 조언은 이어집니다... 최후로 현자는 남편에게 이야기합니다. 집을 해체해서 나뭇가지를 모은 후 머리에 이고 옆에 낀 부부는 현자가 가르쳐준대로 춤을 추듯 걷기 시작했어요. 물론 눈은 감은 채로 말이죠. 한참을 걸은 후 눈을 뜬 부부는 깜짝 놀랐어요. 이제 산이 멀어졌기 때문이에요...^^
같은 동양권인 중국의 민간설화이기 때문에 더더욱 깊은 깨달음을 주며, 3차례 Caldecott 상을 수상한 Arnold Lobel의 수묵화의 느낌을 살린 동양적인 화폭이 잘 어울립니다.
