국내에는 "나는 여자예요!," "프레드 재우기," "그레타와 그레이시의 크리스마스," "옐로의 빨간 안경" 등 다수의 번역서가 출간된 저명한 일러스트레이터인 야스민 이스마일의 대표작 중 하나입니다.

소피아는 이번 생일에 꼭 받고 싶은 선물이 있습니다. 그것은 바로 애완용 기린~! 하지만 기린선물을 받기 위해서는 4명을 설득해야 합니다.

우선 판사인 엄마에게는 기린이 자동차와는 달리 유해가스를 배출하지 않고, 어떤 질병도 일으키지 않으며, 키가 크기 때문에 발레교실에 갈 때 기린을 타고 가서는 2층에 바로 내릴 수 있다고 기린의 장점을 설명합니다.

하지만 판사 엄마는 소피아가 기린을 소유할 준비가 되었다는 어떤 증거도 제시하지 못했고, 어린 아이가 네발 짐승을 운전할 수 있다는 근거법을 제시하지 못했기 때문에 소피아의 요청을 기각한다고 말하네요. 무엇보다도 소피아의 주장은 너무 장황하게 말이 많았다고 지적합니다. 그리고는 좀더 간결하데 자기 주장을 얘기하라고 합니다.

두번째로 사업가인 아빠에게는 기린은 똥을 많이 싸는데, 이를 거름으로 팔면 돈을 벌 수 있다고 주장합니다.

하지만 아빠는 기린을 기르는데 드는 비용과 기린똥을 보관하는 창고에 대한 계획이 없다고 하면서 소피아 주장을 받아들이지 않습니다. 그리고 엄마와 마찬가지로 자기 주장을 하는데 너무 많은 단어들을 사용했다고 지적합니다.

세번째로 정치가인 삼촌과 마지막으로 할머니에게도 기린이 왜 생알 선물이 되어야 하는지 설명하지만 한결같이 말이 너무 길다고 타박합니다.

결국 소피아는 모든 주장들을 한 단어로 줄여서 4명에게 기린 선물을 사달라고 합니다. 그리고 이 한 단어 때문에 소피아는 기린 선물을 받는데 성공하지요. 소피아가 생각해 낸 한 단어는 무엇일까요?

PreS-Gr 1-Poor Sophia. Her birthday is coming, and she only has One True Desire (a pet giraffe), but four major obstacles stand in her way, namely her mother (a judge), father (a businessman), uncle (a politican), and grandmother (a strict disciplinarian). She gives each member of her biracial family an individualized presentation including visuals and supporting material, but each one says no and critiques her presentation as being too wordy. In a last ditch attempt, Sophia does a group presentation of one word ("Please!"), accompanied by a compelling pair of pleading eyes. This effort garners (surprise!) success, so she follows it up with two equally important words-Thank you!" Averbeck's text is a fun take on kindergarten meets the board of directors. Kids will get it even if they don't understand a few of the words (effusive, loquacious, verbose). Ismail's watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations are childlike in the best possible way-featuring bold colors and faces showing great expressions, Sophia's drawings, a pooping giraffe, and just the right amount of detail. They are a perfect complement to the text. VERDICT An amusing story to which kids and adults can relate.
