여성은 언제부터 바지를 입었을까요?

유럽과 미국에서는 19세기에만 해도 여성이 바지를 입는다는 건 상상하기도 어려웠다고 합니다. 남성은 바지, 여성은 드레스, 이렇게 딱 갈려 있었기 때문입니다. 하지만 드레스는 불편한 게 한두 가지가 아니었습니다. 덥고, 무겁고, 답답하고, 숨쉬기 힘들고, 너무 꽉 조여서 허리를 굽힐 수도 없었으니까요. 여성이 자유롭게 바지를 입을 수 없었다니 상상이 되나요?

이런 상식에 용감하게 도전한 사람들이 있습니다. 이 책의 주인공인 메리 에드워즈 워커도 그들 중 한 명입니다. 메리는 어릴 적부터 바지를 입었습니다. 바지가 더 편리하고 좋았기 때문이죠. 바지를 입는다는 이유로 수많은 반대에 부딪히고 날달걀에 맞기도 했지만 메리는 끝까지 신념을 굽히지 않았습니다. 오늘날 우리가 입고 싶은 옷을 마음대로 입을 수 있는 건 메리처럼 용감하게 시대 관습에 도전한 사람들 덕분입니다.

메리 에드워즈 워커는 1832년 뉴욕 주 오스위고에서 태어났습니다. 어릴 적부터 독립적이었고 다른 사람들보다 성평등 문제에 큰 관심과 열정을 갖고 있었습니다. 이렇게 된 데는 부모 영향이 컸는데, 메리의 부모가 자녀들을 자유롭게 생각하고 행동하도록 길렀기 때문입니다. 심지어 자신들의 교육 철학에 맞게 자녀들을 가르치기 위해 직접 학교를 세우기까지 했습니다.

메리는 여성이 바지를 입는다는 사실만으로도 충격이던 시대에 바지를 입은 최초의 여성 가운데 한 명입니다. 어른이 되어서도 바지를 입었다는 이유로 여러 차례 경찰서에 잡혀 가기도 했는데 그때마다 이렇게 주장했습니다. “나는 남자 옷을 입지 않았습니다. 내 옷을 입었을 뿐입니다!”

메리는 1855년 의대를 졸업해 당시 많은 사람들이 여성은 될 수 없다고 여기던 의사가 되었습니다. 남북 전쟁이 일어나자 1861년 북부 연합군에 지원하여 군의관으로 활약했습니다. 역시 모두가 입을 모아 여성은 할 수 없다고 하던 일이었습니다. 메리는 최전방에서 병사들을 진료하다가 남부 연합군에 포로로 잡히기도 했습니다. 남부 연합군은 메리에게 드레스를 입으라고 갖은 방법으로 강요했지만 메리는 끝까지 신념을 꺾지 않았습니다.

1865년 닥터 메리 워커는 미국에서 가장 등급이 높은 무공 훈장인 명예 훈장을 받았습니다. 메리는 그 메달을 자랑스러워하여 매일 옷에 차고 다녔다고 합니다. 이 책이 출간된 현재까지 그 명예 훈장을 받은 여성은 메리가 유일합니다. 메리는 교사이자 외과 의사이자 전쟁 영웅이며, 작가이자 시대 관습에 저항한 위대한 사회 운동가입니다.
