이 책의 작가인 Berkeley Breathed는 미국의 가장 인기있는 일러스트레이터 중 한 명입니다. Bloom County라는 코믹 스트립을 다수의 세계 주요 신문들에 싣고 있기도 하며, 이 코믹으로 퓰리처상을 수상하기도 했습니다.

이 책은 주인공인 소녀가 1인칭 화자가 되어서 거짓말쟁이 오빠 에드로 인해 겪게 된 일들을 유머러스하게 들려줍니다.

오빠 에드는 거짓말로 남들을 골탕 먹이는 것을 좋아합니다. 지난 주에는 마블 아줌마가 브라질의 여왕으로 선출된 기사가 신문에 실렸다고 거짓말을 하는 바람에 마블아줌마가 사라져 버리는 일도 발생했습니다. 아마도 순진한 마블아줌마는 여왕이 되기 위해 브라질로 간 것 같습니다.

어느날 에드오빠가 집안에서 공놀이를 하다가 엄마가 소중하게 아끼는 돼지 모양의 도자기를 깨트렸습니다. 오빠는 아빠에게 하늘에서 돼지 모습을 한 외계인이 나타나서 도자기를 가져가려다가 그만 깨트려버렸다고 거짓말을 했습니다. 그런데 지나가던 로라메 아줌마가 우연히 오빠가 하는 말을 듣고는 마블아줌마도 외계인이 납치해 갔다고 믿고는 정부에 신고를 하는 일이 발생했습니다. 정부에서는 군대를 파견해서 확성기를 하늘에 대고 마블아줌마를 돌려보내라고 소리를 지르는 일이 발생하고, 이 소리를 들은 진짜 돼지 외계인이 먼 우주에서 나타나는 일이 벌어집니다.

에드오빠의 거짓말로 인해 걷잡을 수 없도록 일이 크게 벌어져 버리고, 마블아줌마 납치범이라는 누명을 쓴 외계인 돼지는 거짓말을 한 오빠를 벌주려고 합니다. 이때 주인공 소녀는 착한 거짓말로 오빠를 구해주네요...
