막대기는 단단합니다. 돌멩이는 튼튼하지요. 둘은 언제나 외로웠고 쓸쓸했지만, 막대기와 돌멩이는 놀이터에서 만나 절친이 되었지요.

어느날 막대기는 자신이 어느 나무에서 뿌러진 줄기인지 궁금했습니다. 그래서 자기가 속해있던 나무가족을 찾으러 가기로 했습니다. 그리고 절친인 돌멩이는 기꺼이 막대기의 모험에 동참하기로 했습니다.

하지만 막대기는 자신이 어느 나무의 줄기였는지 전혀 알지 못했습니다. 그리고 자신의 몸에는 나뭇잎이 달려 있지 않기 때문에 추측도 할 수 없었습니다. 떡갈나무일 수도 있고, 소나무일 수도 있고, 단풍나무일 수도 있고, 자작나무일 수도 있지요.

아무런 단서도 없이 무작정 길을 떠난 막대기랑 돌멩이는 호수를 건너고, 숲 속을 지나고, 산꼭대기까지 올라갔습니다만, 막대기가 속했었던 가족 나무를 발견할 수 없었습니다.

그러다 깊은 숲 속에서 길을 잃게 되고, 어디선가 들려오는 무서운 소리 때문에 두려움에 떨고 있을 때, 조그만 솔방울이 나타나서 집으로 돌아가는 길을 안내해 줬습니다. 비록 가족나무는 찾지 못했지만, 솔방울의 도움으로 무사히 집으로 돌아 온 막대기는 다시는 가족나무를 찾지 알을 거라고 말합니다. 그러자 돌멩이는 스윗하게도 "영원히 너의 옆에 있어줄 내가 바로 너의 가족"이라고 말해주네요.

What is 하드커버? 양장본이라고도 불리우며, 표지가 단단한 판지로 만들어진 책입니다. 판지를 천이나 가죽으로 감싸기도 합니다. 책의 속지는 일반적으로 중성처리된 종이(Acid-free paper)를 사용해서 잘 변질이 되지 않기 때문에 오랫동안 보관하기에 적합합니다. 이 종류의 책은 더스트 재킷, 또는 더스트 커버로 불리는 표지덮개가 함께 있는 경우가 많습니다. 간혹 내부 속지가 콩기름 코팅이 된 경우 고약한 냄새가 나는 책도 있습니다.
