후디니는 미국의 유명한 마술사입니다. 벽을 통과하고, 눈 앞에서 코끼리를 사라지게 하고, 모자에서 토끼도 꺼내는 등 온갖 마술들로 사람들을 매료시켰지만, 그를 세계적으로 유명하게 만든 것은 탈출마술입니다. 온 몸을 체인으로 묶고 쇠로 만든 박스에 넣은 후 바닷물에 던져도 그는 여유있게 쇠박스를 열고 탈출했습니다.

10살 소년 빅터는 후디니같은 마술사가 되고 싶었습니다. 그래서 혼자서 할아버지의 트렁크에 들어가서 탈출해보려고 했으나, 뚜껑이 열리지 않아서 엄마가 발견할 때까지 울고 있었지요. 벽 통과하기, 물속에서 오래 숨참기 등 후디니의 마술을 따라하려고 했지만, 제대로 될 리가 없었지요.

엄마와 함께 시골에 있는 이모집에 가기 위해 역에 갔을 때, 빅터는 대합실에서 우연히 후디니를 만나게 됩니다. 그리고 후디니 마술의 비법이 무엇인지 물어봤습니다. 후디니는 나중에 빅터에게 편지를 보내서 자기집으로 오라고 초대를 했습니다.

빅터가 후디니 집에 갔을 때, 후디니 부인에게서 후디니가 죽었다는 슬픈 소식을 들었습니다. 그리고 후디니의 유품인 조그만 상자를 받게 됩니다. 집에 돌아온 빅터는 자물쇠로 잠겨 있는 박스를 열려고 별의별 노력을 다했지만 열 수 없었습니다. 그런데 박스 밑에 이 박스의 소유자 이름의 약자인 E. W.가 적혀있는 것을 발견하게 되고, 이 박스가 후디니 것이 아니라고 생각한 빅터는 너무 실망해서 박스를 온장 밑에 처박아 두고는, 다시는 마술에 관심을 갖지 않게 됩니다.

그런데 빅터가 성장한 후, 아들과 함께 공동묘지 근처 공터에서 야구연습을 하다가 우연히 후디니의 무덤을 발견하게 되고, 묘비에 적힌 후디니의 본명을 보게 됩니다. "Ehrich Weiss". 약자로는 "E. W."

후디니 부인에게서 받았던 상자는 바로 온갖 마술 비법이 들어있던 후디니 본인의 것이었죠. 빅터는 바로 집으로 달려가서 다락방에 먼지를 뒤집어쓰고 있던 박스를 찾았습니다. 그리고 박스를 열었지요.

그날밤 빅터는 평생동안 한번도 성공하지 못했던 할아버지 트렁크에서 탈출하는 마술을 20초만에 성공했습니다.

Ten-year-old Victor has no success emulating his hero, Harry Houdini; no matter how hard or often he tries, he just can't escape from a locked trunk, or hold his breath underwater for 5000 seconds, or run through walls. Then he meets the magician himself in a crowded train station, and some time later receives a mysterious locked box engraved with the initials "E. W." Victor can't imagine who E. W. is and, disappointed, puts the box away. Years later, after Victor grows up and has a son of his own, he learns that Houdini's real name was Ehrich Weiss; he rushes home, opens the box, and that night, while his wife and child lie asleep, he locks himself in the trunk--and escapes in less than 20 seconds. Crosshatched pencil drawings expertly capture the story's droller moments, as well as Victor's changing expressions; details of dress and furnishings, plus dramatic posters on the endpapers, give this a period look and, appropriately, a slightly sentimental flavor. A capsule biography of Houdini is appended. This brief story has an appeal beyond its reading level.
