세계의 어린이들이 가장 좋아하는 캐릭터중의 하나인 아서는 많은 어린이들이 쥐를 의인화한 것으로 알고 있으나, 사실은 aardvark이라는 개미를 잡아먹는 땅돼지를 의인화한 것이죠. 이 책은 땅돼지 아서의 긴 코에 관한 이야기입니다.
아서는 긴 코에 대한 콤플렉스를 갖고 있습니다. 수업시간에 앞에 앉은 친구의 머리에 코가 닿기도 하고, 숨바꼭질을 할 때도 긴 코 때문에 가장 먼저 술레에게 들키곤 합니다. 아서는 다른 동물들의 멋진 코로 바꾸기로 결심하고 성형외과 의사를 찾아갑니다. 의사 선생님은 아서의 코에 다른 동물의 코를 대어보고 맘에 드는 것으로 선택하라고 합니다. 하지만 아서는 자기 얼굴에 가장 어울리는 코는 바로 자기 코라는 것을 알게 됩니다.

A special illustrated section demonstrates just how much this friendly fellow's nose has changed, from a long, droopy, aardvarky nose in 1976, gradually shortening over the years to his nearly nonexistent schnoz today. Arthur has also acquired glasses and a much sunnier disposition over the last quarter century.
In Arthur's Nose, first grader Arthur decides that he doesn't like his nose. He goes to the rhinologist to change it, but ultimately decides, to the relief of his friends and family, "I'm just not me without my nose!" |
