동물원에 가는 길은 교통체증이 심해서 모든 사람들의 신경이 날카로워져 있습니다. 트럭 운전사는 동물처럼 으르렁거리고... 동물원 매표소에서 아빠는 유아용 반값표를 사기 위해 동생의 나이를 속이고... 동물원에서 형제는 구경할 생각은 안하고 먹을 것을 달라고 엄마를 보챕니다... 바분 우리 앞에서는 바분들이 그러는 것처럼 서로 엉켜서 싸우는 형제들, 움직이지 않는 동물들의 주위를 끌려고 소리지르고 창을 두드리는 사람들... 동물원에 온 사람들도 동물들과 다를 것이 없는 행동을 동물들 앞에서 서슴없이 합니다. 돌아오는 차 안에서 엄마는 동물원에서 가장 좋았던 것이 무엇이었냐고 묻습니다. 형은 점심때 먹었던 음식, 동생은 매장에서 산 원숭이 모자, 아빠는 집에 돌아가는 것이라고 대답하면서 저녁식사때는 무엇을 먹을 건지 물어봅니다. 마지막 엄마의 독백... "I don't think the zoo really is for animals . . . I think it's for people"
