[ 책 소개 ]
앤서니 브라운의 단골 주인공인 침팬치 윌리가 등장하며, 그의 작품에 열광하는 어린이 및 어른들에게 커다란 즐거움을 선사하는 책입니다.
우리의 친구 윌리는 독서와 음악 듣기 그리고 여자친구 밀리와 산책하는 것을 가장 좋아합니다. 하지만 스포츠에는 그다지 재능이 없는 것 같아요. 윌리는 축구, 자전거, 수영을 잘 해보려고 노력했지만 도리어 친구들에게 놀림만 받았어요. 밀리와 영화를 보러가도 감수성이 풍부한 윌리의 울음에 주변 사람들이 웃기 일쑤였죠. 그러던 어느날 친구들과 골목에 서있는데 불량배 노즈와 갑자기 나타났어요. 친구들은 도망갔지만 윌리는 그렇지 않았어요. 노즈의 주먹을 피하려고 고개를 숙였다가 다시 들었는데 그만 노즈의 턱을 머리로 받아버렸어요.^^ 윌리가 미안하다며 괜찮냐고 물어보았지만 노즈는 아무말 없이 집으로 갔죠. 윌리는 "챔피언(Champ)"가 되었어요.
앤서니 브라운의 작품은 마치 숨은 그림 찾기와 같이 구석구석에서 예기치 못한 발견을 할 수 있도록 아기자기하게 꾸며져 있지요. 보면 볼수록 새로운 재미를 느끼게 되고, 자신도 모르게 미소짓게 만듭니다. 그림 풍은 초현실적이지만 장면 하나하나를 아주 세밀하게 묘사하고 있어서 독자로 하여금 그림에 몰입하게 만드는 매력이 있습니다.

표지가 두꺼운 판지나 보드지가 아닌 비교적 얇은 종이를 사용해서 만든 책이며, 실박음질 대신에 풀로 제본처리하는 경우가 많습니다. 일반적으로 하드커버나 보드북에 비해서 가격이 저렴합니다. 소프트커버로 불리우기도 합니다. 책의 이음새 부분이 접히거나 휘는 내구성이 그리 좋지는 않은 책입니다.

Browne won the Kate Greenaway Award for Gorilla, a hit in England and America, as was his Willy the Wimp. In this sequel, the timid gorilla-youth is still the butt of the big bullies wherever he goes. Graphic, full-color pictures heighten effects, especially in scenes showing the variety of sporty outfits flaunted by the anthropomorphs. Willy tries to join a soccer team, a bike-racing group and other jock games, but the macho primates sneer and hoot at the little guy's ineptitude. They laugh out loud when they catch Willy crying with his sweet girlfriend at a sad film. But the gang flees in terror when a behemoth almost the size of King Kong strides into town. * His inspiration for GORILLA came from a combination of things -- a greeting card he'd designed of a huge macho gorilla holding a teddy bear, a very lonely boy he knew whose father lived in New Zealand, his own fascination with gorillas.
