School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-This collection of 18 bear stories by various authors and illustrators is not a success. Many of the selections are lackluster and the widely different illustrative styles often clash. The overall layout and design is also weak. For example, Michael Rosen's retelling of ``We're Going On a Bear Hunt,'' illustrated by Helen Oxenbury, is reproduced in three or more panels to a page, and the pictures are so small that most detail is lost. John Burningham's Skip Trip and Wobble Pop, originally done as board books (Viking, 1984; o.p.), are crowded on a double-page spread, the figures and text jammed closely together giving a chaotic rather than active appearance. Children's literature abounds with wonderful bear stories so this hodgepodge is an unnecessary purchase.-Karen James, Louisville Free Public Library, KY

e-book favorites adapted for this collection include Alborough's Where's My Teddy? (1992), Lewis' First Snow (1993), Rosen's We're Going on a Bear Hunt (1989), and Waddell's Let's Go Home, Little Bear (1993). A most appealing anthology for young children. Carolyn Phelan |
